And even then its nearly always a discomfort thing and not a danger thing. I have felt actually nervous for my safety exactly one time in tens of thousands of trips. And even that time, nothing happened.

Everyone has different thresholds before fight or flight kicks in, but I'm a middle aged woman who has ridden the subway for 25 years and have never felt more than concern that a situation was going to cause a delay.
