Maybe I'm wrong, and it doesn't work the way I'll describe it, but I'll try anyway: If you put thinner apple slices at the bottom, preferably on a buttered baking paper, and carefully cover it with the pie contents themselves, it should be more visually appealing. Thinner slices, or a taller fill.

At least that's what I remember from my family's cooking, it's always thin slices at the bottom and a few cm of the "pie itself" on the top. Though, then the bottom is kinda soggy, since it's literally made of baked apples, and isn't covered with pie contents. A classic Charlotte recipe, so to speak

That looks lovely, usually the messy dishes are all flavor. Plus they have personality. I can’t tell you how many plates I’ve had that were all presentation and nothing else. Seriously, how the flavor of food can be cooked OUT of it still amazes and saddens me.
