I’m also curious on that one. In my limited (immigrant’s) understanding it looks like there have been 3 waves of attempted reconstruction, v1.0, civil rights era, and BLM. The first and third had very short duration and almost simultaneous backlash. The middle was more extended (including backlash)

The first Reconstruction lasted for more than a decade and achieved incredible things—while it lasted.

I did not realize it lasted that long, I thought Johnson began undoing it almost immediately.

Ah of course. Thank you! I feel like we may be several generations from people being taught to understand the CRM that way? Which corresponds with a lot of other issues we're dealing with right now

Yep. The failure to teach Reconstruction in a serious way makes a shared national understanding of the CRM basically impossible.
