I don't suppose anyone can recommend an alternative to Android OS that is both free of charge and completely idiot proof?

First person that says some variant of "Get an iPhone" will be blocked, encased in cement, and shot into the sun

I have heard there is some way to load Linux and replace android with it, but i have no idea what it works on or how user friendly it is

I've never used Linux once in my life. I find it... intimidating 😵

Linux isn’t intimidating, especially if you get a distribution that already has a nice UI. It’s building the UI from scratch that can be a bit asinine

I've been looking into E/OS. It's far from perfect but it runs on tweaked version of Android without the Google/Company bloatwares

As in for flashing onto an existing phone? For your options there can depend on what phone you have. Though the majority of them are still Android but with different skins on things. Often de-Googled.

Essentially, yeah. Although if I can de-Google my existing devices that would also achieve my goals adequately

Graphene might be worth a look. https://grapheneos.org/

I like it but it seems to mainly be designed for Pixel phones. Fingers crossed compatibility with my devices will be fine? 😅

They are. And Google is starting to make staying current a little harder for them unfortunately. We live in a time of less than great choices. True alternatives to Android completely are pretty rare and even though I’m a happy Apple user, I long for more competition.

That's your only viable answer at the moment, and you might need Pixel hardware for a decent experience.

Or LineageOS if you can accept a certain compromise on privacy compared to Graphene.

Worth a shot to get further away from Google 🤷‍♂️ I'm potentially screwed with my daily driver, which runs Android Go on a VERY niche device, but for the other two I use on the regular either Lineage or Graphene will be fine assuming they're both compatible
