I’m 100% in favor of single payer, but I disagree that there’s no reason for private health insurance to exist. Given the current absence of single payer, it seems obvious that private health insurance exists to allow people to avoid huge bills (or bankruptcy) in the event of a major health event.

It’s far from perfect and definitely does all the things it’s accused of, but there is a reason people pay premiums, and it’s the same reason any insurance exists. Single payer would still be a vast improvement though.

Premium payments are by and large made by federal spending either through the federal tax advantages for employers or the subsidies for ACA policies. Despite these vast outlays the people who are gifted these premiums are increasingly unable to afford needed care.

The waste also includes pharma reps and equipment reps. A for-profit healthcare system is what we have!
