I know it is arrogant of me to disagree with Steven Hawking in his area of expertise, but the idea of aliens coming and attacking us is the stuff of movies. It makes no sense that it would really happen. If they are move advanced than us, they are likely millions or billions of years ahead of us.
They would have sensed our oxygen rich atmosphere and other life chemicals early on. We are starting to do that with some exoplanets to a limited extend, so they would have discovered us a long time ago and had time to send probes to monitor (and destroy if need be) before homo sapiens evolved.
If they wanted to wipe us out, they would have done it before we industrialized when it was easier. Also, as they advanced technologically, their ability to produce weapons of mass destruction and make them easily available would increase, so non-peaceful advanced aliens would be filtered out.
Yes, they are here. Loeb’s theories reflect a naïveté that is embarrassing. There’s plenty of evidence already here to prove the reality of ETI. The real question is…WHY?
