Really excited for jeeyon, but really annoyed that someone immediately commented "DONT TRY YU-GI-OH!" EVERY game has something to learn from it, even if you think it's "bad" or "broken" afaik YGO is the only TCG with a consistent hidden information element, that alone is interesting to consider

Yugioh is a hard pickup for anyone who's used to a resource system (mana, energy, etc.) because Yugioh doesn't have one: if you can legally play it, you have the choice to. While Modern is incredibly power crept (to the point of no fun, imo), Edison, Tengu, and HAT formats are great.

I always thought the facedown card mechanic was rad. Just an invitation to FAFO. Could be a game changer, or just a bluff under there. I know MtG can play instants out of hand, but this is much more active move to set up and declare that you did a secret thing.

Yugioh is *really* interesting, because the way it plays out at a casual level feels very much like an anime show -- all play, counter, counter-counter -- but at tournament levels it's 'win on turn 1 or lose'.

That's format-dependent, for every bad format where it's basically a coinflip there's a good one where games have a lot more "actually playing" in them

Oooh. Can you suggest a good format I can look up for more?

People are really enjoying the current TCG format with the Justice Hunters decks, I really enjoy the community NR format in Master Duel, and the most popular retro format is Edison Format! Here's a link to the NR community since that's free: discord.gg/W4MgfeAW

It's a work in progress, right now I'm caught up in deck building everything that sounds even remotely interesting 😅 For the most part, Edison is pretty cheap to get into, especially with recent reprints. Dustshoot, Oppression, and Absolute Zero are probably the most expensive cards you'd play.

It’s not around anymore but ChronX, early online tcg, did some REALLY interesting stuff with hidden info that you could only do as something implemented on a computer- you could play stealth cards that your opponent could not even see unless they spent an action with an appropriate creature

FAIR! I wanted to figure out some way to convey the mess of thoughts of "games you can walk into a store and buy/see people playing" as I think that's the biggest hurdle for this sort of thing

But seriously yeah absolutely agree. As much as every part of me as a xCG designer vibrates when looking at a YGO card, it not only had vast influence in what came after it, but it also breaks the mold in cost-accessibility and diverse fan base in a way that _no_ other xCG figured out how to do.

As a narrative designer, when YGO essentially creates continuity and builds storytelling through card imagery alone in a way that pleases many, I _have_ to take notice and respect the work.
