I am a Lana fan (left wing) and yes it's this. There's nostalgia, but a lot of it is undercut by a sense of fear and isolation and surreality. David Lynch and John Waters enjoyed her music for a reason. She does a similar complex dance with Americana.
She's the emblematic post-postmodernist artist (according to my first year English Prof)!!!
