My little town of Hope BC, Canada, (population 7000) is now implementing a similar policy, with our (thinly staffed) Mounties being put on street patrol with bylaw officers to "deter crime."
This is a tourist town where the typical crime is property theft, and occasional drunk and disorderly (no one cares much about the overdose deaths). It's purely performative and puts unnecessary strain on a police force that has to deal with daily emergencies on the many highways that pass through.
