I have been rewatching 30 Rock, which remains well-crafted with some bits that really didn't age well, but my main takeaway is, jesus christ the 00s were a long fuckin time ago

My son, born 2008, this week discovered that second graders, who he’s a school big brother to, were born in 2018. He’s still playing videos game from that year, he told me, and I let him know he has a lifetime of such insults ahead of him.
As I'm getting older (early 60's now), I keep coming back to a phrase I'd encountered in my 20's. "The past is a different country." It perplexed me deeply on the first encounter. It's making a hellava lot more sense nowadays.
If the Smashing Pumpkins hit song 1979 were to be written today, it would be called 2008. I'm sorry.
If American Graffiti were released today, it would be about 2014.
this is violence
Even I am outraged by this one
Uncalled for!
Why would you do this to me, whyyy
I love a Scooter Libby reference cuz I'm old. So old.
I didn’t think I’d live this long given the earth shattering in 16’ it really took the piss out of Veep.
Look, man, in 1975 didn't 1955 seem like it was ancient times? 20 years *is* a long time! It's not just you!
In 1975 I wasn't listening to Elvis. He was old hat.
I just remember we were watching the second season of "Happy Days" and laughing at how old fashioned it all was. "Oh my Goodness, can you believe people wore clothes like that?"
Thankfully, prom pics of my date's maroon and herringbone tux burned up in a fire.
My brothers wedding was… disturbing. Groom wore white tails tux, groomsmen in chocolate brown w ruffled shirts and giant brown bowties, bridesmaids in peach. It was tragic. Took me years before I could wear brown again.
I will admit to missing my brown paisley wide-collar velour shirt, but only in an ironic way.
Actually that shirt sounds kinda 🔥🔥🔥
As in, "it would go up like a Roman candle if you stood to close to a match?" Probably.
I freely admit to wearing suffocatingly clingy polyester shirts, bellbottoms or “flares” and stacked heels in the late 70s. One had to be prepared to disco at a moment’s notice, in case Donna Summer dropped a new album.
"Rural Juror" is forever.
Well yeah, it came right after "the late 1900s", after all. That one completely kills me. bsky.app/profile/jeof...
The linear nature of time gets to be a real bitch, at a certain point
I have niblings born in the 00’s, and it blows my mind that that decade occupies the same conceptual space in their minds that the 1960’s did/does in mine. 🕚😵💫🕐
also the fact that I had a development deal with SNL in 99 that didn't go anywhere gives it a complicated aftertaste
That’s how I feel about Nickelodeon, although as a middle aged person it doesn’t come up as often.
we did one animation with sparky in it and tried various voice actors. jimmy fallon was terrible. I think we ended up using horatio sanz.
fallon truly fails upward
yikes
"jimmy fallon was terrible" Some things never change
pretty sure I met tina fey once during a meeting where we were waiting for a musician to come up with some opening music but we were both so socially awkward we just sat around looking at whatever people looked at before we had phones, which seems really appropriate in retrospect.
a thing like that, you just get thrown into the deep end, and it's like a test to see if you can suss out the appropriate way to act without anyone telling you what's expected. it was a weird fucking year, and I was planning a wedding at the same time.
not to mention THE WEEKLY DEADLINE, the blessing and curse of my entire life since I was 28 or so
sword of damocles hanging over my head for 35 years now
wondering how long that thread can hold
Props to you for figuring out how to run alongside speeding (upended media, personal life) boxcars, while still carrying that sword overhead! (You’ve _got the tensile strength; matching that with enough of whatever revives you, off-the-clock, might be the challenge!)
me (my depression): whoa convenient
That ain't no crime. 🎶
Well yeah but how was his performance? 🥁 aaayyyy
Jimmy Fallon remains terrible
Like even without the pretty damn significant problems with how he treats his staff, dude just can't read a line without breaking.
I have similar whatthefuck thoughts about my cultural contributions to the 80s and 90s. At least I wasn't promoting killing machines (guns) as answers to human problems.
All these years but it’s always Wednesday
I've simply never stopped rewatching it, so it feels current to me?
I dunno, the Dick Cheney and Obama jokes are a leeetle bit dated, not to mention all the blackface stuff
And yet I last saw this on TV six months ago. Impossible
A Blaffair to Rememblack.
Lot of bangers. Fair bit of 'yikes'.
Is it just me tho' or does some of the dialogue feel ahead of its time? Maybe I just didn't know enough about US politics in the 00s - because I didn't have to! But yes, agree some of it has aged worse than US beef! bsky.app/profile/blue...
I've been rewatching (the original) Night Court. Which will make ya feel even older.
ha! there's a 30 Rock episode that has a night court reunion as a sub plot
Not sure that works without Selma Diamond
I think I was already married when that came out. My childhood TV was mostly in the Dark Ages between the original Star Trek and the reboots.
I remember in the early 2000's being excited that twenty years later we would be referring to those times as "the aughts." "Back in aught-six or so..." Kinda sad that never really caught on. At least not yet.
Never fear, I refer to them as the aughts! Been spreading it since the mid-teens.
Shower Scotch.
