working and talking with americans all day really makes this clear; stuff we take for granted here and in europe--community sport, big clubs you're a part of--don't exist, or are incredibly rare, in the US. that stuff is the bedrock of a community!

I work in publishing and one book I worked on argued that we used unions for this in the states. Once both parties stopped meaningfully supporting unions, many disbanded and workers had to turn to gun clubs and churches for community, which of course pushed many to the right.

Absolutely! My grandparents were not social people, but my nana belonged to the local lawn bowls club for over 40 years. The old ladies formed an honour guard at her funeral!
