in the face of omnicide, the only way to prevent climate collapse is imperial collapse

Extinction means nothing to most people. For lots of people, for example, Extinction is just the Rapture. Which they want, they want for human life to be over. There's a death cult in charge at the worst possible time.

I don't think we can blame this on religion. The world's policymakers are, very openly, motivated by short-term profit. That's why the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement were inadequate when they were written, and have been ignored ever since.

On an anecdotal level...for 20 years, I've been talking about global warming both on and off social media. Now, none of my friends, family, neighbors, or (when I've had them) work colleagues have ever been particularly religious.

And they agree with me when they hear me talk, and they hit "like" on my posts. But then they go ahead and get mortgages in flood-prone suburbs, and buy minivans and SUVs, and crank out 2.5 children, and so on.

Jesus or no Jesus, "extinction" doesn't mean anything to them either. They don't even care -- in a meaningful, determining-life-choices sense -- about the standard climate change narrative. They're gonna have the same lifestyle that Mommy and Daddy raised them in, AMOC and carbon cycles be damned.

I agree when it comes to the average person. But when it comes to many of the people around the president, I dont think that's the case. For the average person, I think it's just consumer brain

Those people belong on the fringes. They shouldn't ever be allowed to retain any power.

But, we have to increase our quarterly profits, for now, or we lose our investor confidence. If we lose investor confidence, everyone gets axed. We will lose our HMO, and have to pay taxes on my 401K, when we have to use it to live on!

If you want to influence the global climate, you need to end industrialisation, destroy prosperity and combat overpopulation.

So probably will by 2050. That’s been my rule of thumb since the 00’s anyway. I think they’re so afraid of sounding like alarmist lunatics they go with the absolute most conservative possible model every time. And every estimate from the 90’s and 00’s has really borne that out. We’re donezo.

I remember when I first did a global warming/climate change deep-dive, about 15-ish years ago at this point. And all the graphs and models I ran into -- except from James Hansen, who was treated as a lunatic -- simply stopped at 2100 AD. Because they...just didn't want to play it out to the end.

And the reason is exactly what Professor Rahmstorf says in the thread. "Even for low emissions (compatible with the Paris agreement) we are not safe." Even climatologists don't really want to admit that, much less the politicians they work for. So by-and-large, they just...don't.
