While this is great news, there is still a need for abundant clean energy for the short winter days when there is minimal sun and it's not windy..... And the truth of that is nuclear. Until our politicians realise that, net zero targets will fail. 😒

We don't need any more nuclear, it's inflexible and may be down for months for maintenance. Vehicle 2 Grid can cover 99.9% of winter low wind conditions, assuming we wholesale switch to EVs in a reasonable timescale.

a single high pressure water nuclear reactor needs less maintenance than hundreds of solar farms. produces more electricity and generates no emissions. I'm not saying either Nuclear or renewables ALONE are the answer. we need a mix of the 2 if we are to rid the world of fossil fuels for energy.

I don’t know what maintenance you imagine solar farms need other than cleaning.

Cleaning, reducing obstuctive plant growth etc... Mass scale solar farms cannot be compared to a domestic roof mounted solar panel array. Please do not misunderstand me... I fully support renewables and the drive to Net Zero. But we are kidding ourselves if that does not include Nuclear.

You think those two simple jobs is more maintenance than a nuclear power plant?

Even cleaning (in the UK) isn't essential, maybe on a grid scale farm it's worth it, but rain does a sufficient job. For vegetation clearance there are these amazing new tools (side benefit is they shut up Nimbies about food production).

Solar needs no significant maintenance, I've had mine for over 10 years, maintenance bill Β£0. Every ~2 years or so a nuclear reactor is down for months for refuelling and inspection. Just saying we don't need more nuclear.
