#anthonypowelltogether- with the return of Moreland and the mention of Stringham, it occurs to me that I have missed the comedy they both provided!

Yes! And energy. Also Barnby, Audrey, and Matilda. Like old chums.
I’ve missed those characters
Agreed: the comedy and odd, melancholy approach to life. So many of the people he meets now are operators in one way or another (Glober, Ada, Pam, in her unorthodox way).
Operators. Great word. Today I was wondering if Powell intended this as comment on post-war culture, drive, character. They all have angles. Even Udo and his cars. Not total people. Soulless?
I wonder that, too--or if this is what it takes to survive/thrive? But then Templer was an operator; he got a little overzealous in his operations. There is something soulless about these later books. People pushing their agendas, relentlessly; those who can't play like that (Trapnel) flaring out.
