Name an author you think is overrated. I'll go first: James Joyce
Name an author you think is overrated. I'll go first: James Joyce
Seriously, Thoreau. I was forced to read him a few times and felt my soul leave my body.
๐๐๐ผ
I tend to think that all writers are โฆ admirable. BUT, will go with Jackie Collins and anyone who pens drivel
I agree. And yeah - some are really bad.
๐คข
JK Rowling ๐
Oh so agree
John Steinbeck. The Grapes of Wrath was a nightmare to read
Hi, Aunty - I can see that
Krasnov's speech writer
Iโve never managed a single Rushdie and have tried multiple times. I second James Joyce too.
๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
Are we limited to one entry per participant? Sig Larson's trilogy leaps to mind as I search for the closest window to leap out of. Way, way too violent for my taste.
๐คญ No way! As many as you want, friend. I get that!
I can't stand Albert Camus, no matter how hard I try.
I really feel this.
Interesting choice. Which one pushed you over the edge?
Finnegan. Babbling! Not to say I don't like some of his work, though.
Understood. Fair enough. Likes and dislikes are very nuanced.
๐ฅฐ
Ayn Rand
When in college, out of curiosity, I read both her major works. I was underwhelmed. ๐
Hol up, people rate Ayn Rand? Like, not use her as an excuse for their darkest classist desires, but rare her?
omg YES!
Can't forget the undercurrent of our present moment!
So true. My MAGAt cousin believes there's eternal truth in Rand. sheesh
Sheesh is right. There's eternal truth in a lot of things..... but disagree about that
And so smug!
Elitist!
oh! Perfect - yes!
Dan Brown
Well, I liked the movies. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
hey, Kathy! DiVinci code guy? yeah - for sure.
Yes
No thanks.
Yet he is a top seller!
Heโs horrid.
Malcom Gladwell
Omg, nailed it!! Of serious authors, he was the worst! At first I thought it was me-so famous(!), but no, he was just a self indulgent jerk. Soo boring.๐
You know it! Its enough!
The author of "Covfefe".
Roald Dahl!
๐๐๐ผ
I have said for decades that Roald Dahl must have been abused as a child because all of the adults in his books are bad parents and bad people!
That could be. I'm only familiar with Charlie And the C.F. But that would make sense.
Emily Brontรซ - Iโm probably gonna get some pushback for adding her to this list but I thought Wuthering Heights was a slog.
Adolf Hitler
Lol - ๐
He was an underrated painter though. ( Risky joke )
c r i n g e! Lol!
JK Rowling
Iโve got a small group for youโฆ Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
The ghost-writer of Art of the Deal.
JK No joke, except her poorly formed writings
She's the fav overrated so far.
Well deserved. The only place she's not going to be overrated is on the list of being overrated
"That's not writing. It's typing." Truman Capote on Jack Kerouac
Agreed! Lol!
Totes agree.
babblebabblebabble Good Sunday Morn, dear!๐
Gโday, chief!! ๐๐๐
๐ฅฐ How are you today?
Ernest Hemingway. It's a literal struggle to get through any one of his books.
He's my 2nd pick for that. ugh.
Definitely! I've tried to read "Ulysses" about half a dozen times and can't make it through three chapters. It's absolute garbage!
Henry Miller Anais Nin
๐๐ผ
Hemingway Longest sentences in the world And...yawn
my second pick for overrated - so true.
Ayn Rand for sure...horrible books and a horrible person.
So true. ugh
I don't know if Mary Shelley would be considered overrated. I do know that being forced to read Frankenstein was torture, absolute torture.
Oh I bet. ugh!
Do a what was your favorite book. I'll start: Slaughterhouse-Five
Lonesome Dove
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 42. IYKYK.
...it WAS Good Omens. Don't know what's going to take its place.
The Great Gatsby
Great pick
I loved that book.
Blood Meridian or Moby-Dick
"The Eight", by Katherine Neville
Still Vonnegut but Cat's Cradle for me
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
I read M.A.S.H. about a dozen times back in the day. The Grapes of Wrath was a favorite in high school.
Grapes of Wrath is an excellent book.
Every one of his books that Iโve read is great.
Writing is an art form, just because I hate someone doesn't mean they're overrated. Tom Robbins is overrated, though.
๐๐๐ผ
I did appreciate the bomb recipes
I can't say I remember any. I'm only familiar with Even Cowgirls and I didn't finish it.
Also, some kind of pipe bomb, if I recall.
sheesh. Not good.
I had to look it up... Delete it of course, if you're worried about the feds or whatever. www.angelfire.com/tx5/jcgcardm...
๐คญ Thanks for this.
I think it was in the woodpecker one. Like if you cut the red pips out of those uncoated playing cards, you can make a bomb with them, some chemical in the dye. Can't remember, it's got to be close to 30 years
Thats creative, at least.
Yes, and much less misogynistic ๐ฌ
yikes! Yeah
Thomas Hardy. Two of his novels were forced upon me in high school. Try as I might, I never finished either of them. Even the Cliff's Notes (only those of a certain age know that reference) were interminably boring.
Yay Cliff Notes! They helped me understand โThe Sound And The Furyโ in college lit class.
Yikes! Sounds really bad! Even the C Notes... wow.
Must respectfully disagree. Jude the Obscure is a masterpiece.
To each his own.
Shakespeare. ( Gonna go into hiding now! ) :)
What! ๐คจ
Gutsy pick!
I'm sure this post is gonna haunt me if I ever make it big.
Controversy sells, man!
All publicity is good publicity ( until it comes back to bite you in the arse ). :)
Indeed. Hence then need for "influencers"
๐๐๐
JK Rowling
I would say this even if she wasnโt a terf. She came up with a great concept that captures imagination well, but the writing itself is a bit mediocre at best.
Cliches, stereotypes all over them.
Haha same answer
Big time.
Come on! That was low hanging fruit! ๐
Jake Tapper
Hahah! Perfect!
James Patterson
Dirty Boy
๐ well done
James Fucker Comey
Wait. Did he publish something?
Oh yeah!
Anne RIce - her subsequent work may have faltered substantially already, but I was never able to finish her breakthrough book, Interview with a Vampire. Just too angsty, became a chore to slog through.
I didn't finish it either. or the movie. A slog for sure.
Similarly, I found some of the woods scenes with the 3 main characters of Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to be too self-involved and whiny, interrupting the otherwise breathless narrative push of the books.
I don't know that one but, thanks for saying.
Hemmingway
My #2. For sure.
J K Rowling
Haha same answer! I'm not the only one then
For sure.
John Irving
Boom! I see it
Carl Hiassen
No idea. I'll take your word!
I don't know him. google...
Enjoy....Lucky You and Skinny Dip
Thanks!
Nathaniel Hawthorne
Dean koonz
yes!
Nicholas Sparks ๐คฎ
yup!
