Guy I know who does gorgeous time lapse videos lives in downtown LA, I visited long ago by taking the subway system, and he didn’t own a car. Explained how to get around and I was floored. The airport was the biggest PITA (this was before Uber).

They claim it will be fixed for the Olympics, but airport access has been ludicrously bad. For me, by transit: 1) 1 mile walk to the train station 2) Light rail to Union Station - fast, cheap ($1.75), frequent. Do have to wait in the middle of a highway. 3) Catch the privately run "FlyAway Bus".
The FlyAway bus, which has a monopoly, runs once per hour. It travels on normal roads in normal lanes, so the 20 mile trip can take 90 minutes. If it's full you wait for the next one, an hour later. Picking up at the airport it starts at terminal 1 and can fill up by the time it's halfway through.
Before recent improvements to LAX the pickup area at the airport was a poorly marked narrow island between four lanes of traffic on either side, with nothing to sit on for those who were medically unable to stand for up to an hour, or more.
