these people are as eager to keep out a talented young white man from bristol as they are an eager black kid from portsmouth or a young white woman from alexandria

Now it all makes sense.
When a rich kid who has had every advantage in life can’t get into the school of their choice, that kid’s parents have to confront the fact that their kid just isn’t as talented as some poor kid who worked hard and earned a spot. They hate that.
👍🤬
Friendly amendment. "almost as eager" (instead of the first "eager")
the commonwealth of virginia in the 21st century is a diverse, cosmopolitan place where some of the best of the old and the new mix to form something exciting, and these people hate it.
Exactly this.
from Louisiana; far away - but wouldn't hate
And half the towns in VA are named like Ole Honey Shunck or Grubb and I think that’s beautiful
Theres also mad places named like "plantation road" so you gotta take the good with the bad 😂
March, march, march to the 18th century, and don't spare the bullwhips!
the heart of the confederacy becoming a diverse, cosmopolitan place is pretty terrifying. if it can happen there, it can happen anywhere.
LOL
This is such a good description of what I love about my state - and why Youngkin’s vision for its universities is so disappointing. Hopeful to see it soundly rejected this year!
In theory, hasn’t the horse left the barn on this? Is this the zombie corpse of history trying to survive by eating our brains?
UVA still has a number of living alumni who remember "the good old days" before full integration and coeducation. And they think their money can turn back time.
Diversity, fairness and equality are scary to the self-precious.
This is so true— I live in Northern Virginia and when I took my child for a visit to UVA, the diversity of the the students was striking. She’s there now!
I was the young white woman from Alexandria. Had a nonprofit background and not much $ in the bank. A scholarship helped me get my MBA at UVA and I like to think that I added something to classroom discussions on how industry impacts people and the planet.
So basically an institute that hands out degrees to people who'll go on to get instant jobs somewhere.
they want it to be for young white failsons what they accuse it of being for everyone else
They see elite universities as a mechanism for passing caste membership to their children, nothing more.
As with everything else Trump/MAGA, the cruelty and oppression are the point. In the current regime-I-refuse-to-call-an-administration, Stephen Miller, a white nationalist driven entirely by childish bigotry, hatred, and resentment, is calling the shots. He syncs with Trump's personality perfectly.
The real story was the absolutely revolting shenanigans of the Youngkin stacked VMI board who conspired to force out MG Wins
Absolutely. And maybe it's easier for me to see since I grew up in a small monolithic rural town, but you can absolutely be the wrong kind of white person to other whites. Especially when you add in class differences. DEI protects us all.
