doro wat would put scarlett o'hara into a coma
doro wat would put scarlett o'hara into a coma
I’ll answer Craig’s question- yes, people are insane!
No one is stopping them from dressing like this and having parties.
Just join KA fraternity in most southern colleges.
So they replaced two Ks with an A?
Pretty much.
There's no greater sign that someone's a jackoff than the pseudo ancient Roman/Greek profile.
Whose going to tell them a black woman won an oscar for that film?
Twitter went from Thunderdome to Klan Rally pretty fast. The troubling thing is how it’s shifted all the narratives.
As would kitfo
In fairness she did vow never to go hungry again
I will travel hours for doro wat!
man i was ready to burn the slaver plantations for free, now you tell me i can get tibs and injera out of the deal too??? 😭😭😭 (also aside but the only actually-good scene in that film is the one where rhett is patiently explaining why the south is gonna get its ass kicked)
A lot of not-stupid Southerners, including Gen. Sherman himself, were saying that exact same thing: The North is far better equipped and very motivated, and Southern gentlemanly honor will not carry the war
Yes, misir
youtu.be/S72nI4Ex_E0?...
The scoundrel
I have thought of that scene a lot lately.
"I do declare!" Rhett Butler, right before shitting his pants immediately after his first taste of zil zil tibs
Weird how Gone With the Wind and Ethiopia keep intersecting in my life 👀 … also now I want doro wot
Injera or Wonder Bread... 🤔
As God is her witness, she'll never be hungry again.
This was so racist it took me a minute to figure out how racist it was.
burning Atlanta for beef tibs (and I’d do it again)
I reread Civil War books JUST for Sherman's Drive. Planter's begging for mercy as their homes are razed and their crops used to feed Sherman's men and the droves of freed slaves is as satisfying as almost any event in US history.
Either OP honestly believes this, or this is all a grift. Idk which is worse
Sherman marched so we could run (to the corner to grab a jar of berbere).
That’s one of the great things about it
Would she pick up ingera with her fingers?
KITFO!!! I oder it and the waitperson always tells me, "I'm not talking it back."
"You know what it i—" "Yes. Delicious"
And how!!! Lol
Ethiopian food is worth eating for the spongey-wet bread plate thing ALONE!!!
First date with my wife was at a little Ethiopian place off U Street in DC
Dukem!
bsky.app/profile/adam...
Good choice(s)!
Good bit Joey. Though the correct answer is Chercher by the convention center.
In our case it was Etete, which sadly has closed since. But our regular take-out place when we were dating was Dukem.
I assumed it was Queen of Sheba which is also gone unfortunately
Man there were so many good ones
Ethiopic on H St is also fantastic.
Ethiopic was my first experience with Ethiopian food iirc Been in love with it since
Dukem was our go to while living in Baltimore
Chercher is the best Ethiopian in DC and maybe the best meal I've ever had in DC
Good restaurant. I go probably 2 to 3 times a year and always during TRB.
My understanding is that a lot of the very best Ethiopian places have moved to the suburbs over the last 15 years or so
There are still some reliable Ethiopian places in DC proper, but a lot of immigrant or refugee communities have also moved in in recent years. Endless taquerias, Ukrainian food, Uyghur cuisine, c’est magnifique.
A couple years ago I was working in Addis and my Ethiopian coworkers debated whether the best food in “DC” was in Georgetown or Silver Spring. Sadly I don’t remember restaurant names but the consensus leaned towards Silver Spring because there’s a Kaldi’s Coffee there
I’m told the best place is in Alexandria but I keep forgetting the name-unfortunately I don’t do group dinners out very much and I’m not huge on solo Ethiopian
Njera in Arlington is my personal fav
I'm a firm believer in Chercher (on 9th and O) supremacy.
Three votes! I think Chercher carries the day!
I don't miss being in my early 20s much but I do miss beef tibs and an ice cold beer at chercher a lot
I don't think I've ever done solo Ethiopian come to think of it
It’s expensive but it’s also hella leftovers.
Hmm bsky meetup?
We should!!
Name a time and place!
Sadly I now live in Brooklyn where Ethiopian options are few and far between, and hardly worth the effort
Oakland has an entire *neighborhood* of Ethiopian places, nowadays. So if you wanna come out west just let me know.
brooklyn has nothing on camden
Tsehay is keeping the Adams Morgan tradition alive
I keep walking by there and never go cause i hardly ever eat in Adams Morgan.
It’s excellent. The veg dishes in particular are better than I’ve had at other places (though the meat ones are still my favs)
i can personally vouch for this place (Sora Ethiopian Market, Cafe, Alexandria) maps.app.goo.gl/Tj39SRkUrGk6...
Hawwi maybe? Not a particular fan of them. I've basically done the rounds and imo the best is Elfegne in AdMo. Chercer is probably a good #2, then maybe some of the suburban places.
Oh wait it's gotta be Feru, one of the few places I haven't made it to yet
Tom Sietsema put Feru in Alexandria on his top list last year, and I can confirm it was VERY good. But the Alexandria location recently changed hands and the previous owner opened up a new location on H Street, which I haven't been to yet.
Ah, didnt know that DC had a large Ethiopian diaspora. I'm in the Minneapolis metro; was wondering what other area lucked out with Ethiopian immigrants
Yeah I asked a new Ethiopian colleague in NYC where to go for good Ethiopian food in New York… he deadpan replied, ‘DC.’ 😭
Oof.
harsh, but also fair.
He’s right tho
Alexandria, VA just outside DC has the largest % of Ethiopian residents for an incorporated city of over 100k people iirc. Silver Spring MD might have it beat but is unincoporated
This seems about right, also if you live in Takoma we might have crossed paths? I used to hang out there a lot and still do semi-regularly
Biggest concentration of Ethiopians outside of Ethiopia IIRC
I think Minneapolis has more per capita, but less overall. Largest Somali diaspora, though!
There are many great things about DC, but this up near the top IMHO.
You can reliably get tej in liquor stores
My in-laws are Ethiopian, wife is first generation. Can confirm.
I have heard Oakland (specifically greater Temescal neighborhood) has the largest concentration of Ethiopians outside the country. I don’t know if it is true, but I can walk to at least a half dozen Ethiopian restaurants. (cc: adamgurri.liberalcurrents.com)
Oh nice to see things moving *to* the city like that
Silver Spring has so many Ethiopian spots that are excellent. My cousins and I basically go to a new one each time I visit home and have yet to be dissatisfied. Special shoutout to Melekhet over by Snyder’s. My mom’s student’s parents run it and it is amazing.
habesha?!?
That or Keren? Which has tragically closed
I too first tried Ethiopian food at a little place in DC! It was next to a dance club!
In this context "Ethiopian" doesn't mean "from Ethiopia." It's "Race Science" jargon.
Ethiopian is easily a top 3 cuisine
She would a have a hard time getting her hand around it
Injera is perhaps the best version of starchy staple yet invented so long as someone else is making it.
Have you tried the South Indian dosa?
I think so. Most of what I can get around here is North Indian so it's been a while.
Maybe I should have been more elaborate. I have had injira and come from where dosa is a staple. I have bias, but I believe dosa beats injira any day.
There is, technically, no disputing matters of taste
I've no idea where you live. Assuming USA, any big city should have a south Indian cuisine restaurant. Andhra, Tamil, Telengana, Kerala - these are keywords to catch one. You should try. Poles apart from North Indian cuisine and hope you love it.
South Indian food is good and spicy too. If it's not clearing your nose and making your brow sweat it's not hot enough.
The hotness is different within South India too. The Andhra-Telengana crowd uses predominantly red-chilli for the heat. However, Kerala and Tamil cuisine use black pepper and green chillies.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a yam
there's one in my neck of the woods called "Empanada Intifada"
There used to be a good truck parked in front of the Irish bar in the lower Haight that served a fusion of Irish and Eritrean food. It was called Eire-trea.
Love that
Damn that was good.
Did you eat there? I miss seeing it on the block.
I'm pretty sure I did. It wasn't there during the core of my lower haight days, but I have some vague memories.
*food truck Goddamn autocorrect
I mean good truck still works…
I complained about autocorrect in a text message I dictated. It was changed to "autocorrupt." Probably more accurate.
Someone cursed autocarrot in a reply to me that left me in tears once
Brilliant
If you fuse Irish and Ethiopian, you get the absolute legend that is Ruth Negga.
Oh I remember seeing that truck and I never got a chance to order from it! Honestly the Bay could use like 10 more decent Ethiopian spots. We have a few, but I require more.
SF could use more, there’s plenty if you are willing to BART to the East Bay though. I used to live in North Oakland and there were like 5 Ethiopian restaurants and 2 Ethiopian spice shops near my apartment.
East Bay has great options! But yeah since I live in the city I’d love even more options here.
I feel like SF has half a dozen really great Ethiopian restaurants!
Ok clearly the Ethiopian food scene has been off my radar! Do you have favorites? I feel like I mostly know Club Wazima and Moya but I’d love more options.
I adore House of Tadu in the Dogpatch. Also Cafe Ethiopia on Valencia. Moya definitely slaps! Also I LOVE New Eritrea on Irving in the Sunset... Just off the top of my head!
Thank you thank you! Adding all of these to my bookmarks for future injera face stuffing.
The nose pinch I just did in appreciation…
I find it so funny that these guys who post about “trad” aesthetics only ever seem to wear tight fitting t-shirts, while if you see someone out and about in old-timey period clothing, 80% chance they’re some flavor of queer nerd with a cool hobby.
Not *just* t-shirts Also poorly-tailored suits made of repulsive fabrics in grotesque colors (this article called it "blogger blue") but that also confirms your observation www.esquire.com/style/mens-f...
Hey now to be fair a primary color suit can look slick as hell if your ancestors didn't come from a rain-drenched island with zero melanin.
And if you have it correctly tailored, which this is not. Ditto everything Trump wears.
This person clearly never tried my Misir Wat (And I'm white).
There's a place in my neighborhood where I can eat Doro Wat and get a fancy cocktail and listen to live klezmer music all at once and that's why America is so great.
Where is this, i need to make plans immediately
It's one of at least a half dozen really solid Ethiopian/Eritrean spots in our neighborhood.
Abyssinia in West Philly. Klezmer night is once a month but the doro wat and fancy cocktails are every night. They also have bluegrass nights and chess nights and hardcore punk acts.
Bluegrass, cocktails, and doro wat would fix me
I mean, I go to that and I'm still fucked up. But it's a good time.
Well, I should've added (aspirational) maybe
Of course Philly.
I don’t spend enough time in west Philly when I go there tbh
I used to live a few blocks from there, incredible spot. Also the Ethiopian chicken cheesesteak at Gojjo is out of this world.
oh ya I've heard of it, the guy who runs it Dan Blackberg has a podcast about klezmer @radiantothers.bsky.social great guy
OK this is my new favorite place I’ve never been. Now…when to go to Philly
Attn @possumrabbi.bsky.social since i think at this point you go to Philly more often than I do
DORO WAT IS SO GOOD. So good that I have grown and still grow on occasion Ethiopian chiles so that I can make a proper sauce.
Had the best doro tibs of my life last Friday, def better than chattel slavery imo
Jokes on them, I struggle with dinner ideas on the daily, you dangle a new (to me) and exciting type of cuisine in front of me, I’m gonna eat that shit up, work it into regular rotation at home!
So good.
Ignoring the criminality of their entire economy, Southern slavers were tacky, vacuous, & fake. Plantation houses were McMansions. Their aristocratic, Ancien Regime pretensions were affectations applied over a single generation as a cloying defense mechanism against rising anti-slavery sentiment
Mount Vernon is the perfect example of this. Fake marble, cheaper woods painted to look like oak, ebony or cherry wood. The main building isn't even that big - then again, it didn't need to be, as the slaves were housed in brick hotels away from the big house.
📌
Like I haven’t eaten Ethiopian food before but I’m gonna say it’s 2927373^nth better than whatever this antebellum nonsense is.
Put it on your to-do list; it’s amazing.
This is the universe giving you a sign to try it!
Ate here recently. lucyethiopianrestaurant.com Wow. Definitely recommend the coffee with full ceremony!
It is indeed that good
She spent the entire movie trying to steal that Mels husband!
Berbere is probably the best spice blend created in human history. It makes everything better in seemingly magical ways. Hell, it tastes so natural with turkey you'd swear they came from the same place, an enchanted land of deliciousness.
Misir wot and shiro wat would blow these people’s minds
Ethiopia is way up there at the top. No other native cuisine even comes close to the amount of spice they use!
North USA with the massive overperformance. That's American exceptionalism!
Where did this chart come from? It's interesting in which regions are included.
Source is in the alt text, from this article: www.inverse.com/culture/spic...
Thanks. Gotta learn to check the alt text!
Our foster daughter is Ethiopian. This helps explain the 20 bottles of hot sauce and 10 containers of chili powder scattered throughout our cupboards.
in fairness, if this chart subdivided Mexico (a huge country) the same way it does India, Oaxaca would be up in that upper right corner too.
This graph is why they invented data science
Wait @avzaagzonunaada.bsky.social, have you seen this chart? You'll find the part closest to the x-axis interesting
And she’d hate injera.
These people have never had tacos e tortas
I mean look at this. I want to take a trip just to try this www.smokenashbbq.net
When I visited my sister in the metroplex it was the one request I had on the trip. It's delicious.
Will be going there in late September for my long work trip to Arlington.
ordering the tex-ethiopian for 2 platter but for just you
That was already the plan. Glad to get a second opinion confirming.
A FB friend raved about it recently.
That one tex-ethiopian place alone would be worth it
One of the best things about working in New Haven was the food trucks. They set up afternoons near the hockey rink, and the choices! Multiple Thai and Indian, a Kati roll truck and an Ethiopian truck were my favorites. Fosolia was my favorite, but you could get four different types for under $10!
The only thing I'm mad about when it comes to Ethiopian food is that it took me until my 30's until I first had it. All those years wasted not knowing how good it was.
At least one third of White Southerners antebellum lived a subsistence existence and justifiably blamed the planter elite for their circumstances. White trash, you know, suspected of allying themselves with the enslaved when convenient. That's literally my heritage.
The Confederate Army has an enormous desertion problem and wouldn't have been able to field a fighting force but for offering a steady job and, eventually, conscripting men.
I hope "Pork" and his buddies put Carolina Reapers in that damn barbecue sauce while Mammy and the rest of her squad hid all the chamber pots.
Love doro wat!! And yeah, the smell of berbere spice would have miss ma’am out.
WTF
In fairness it does tend to put me in a bit of a coma myself I tell my friends to stop eating before they feel full because it expands, but I fail to follow my own advice
😔😔😔 it’s worth it
In addition to the abhorrent nature of racism, what these goons don’t get is that most wyt folk were poor losers, and that’s what they’d be if they managed to bring back that period, anyway. They wouldn’t be enjoying antebellum balls, they’d be having their own balls busted by the landed gentry.
!!!!!!!
I mean, I didn’t lie. It’s wild, the way some just don’t get it. Who their actually comrades ought to be. Solidarity. Sad!
Undoubtedly
Could you imagine how boring the food scene would be in the US without influences from other countries? Our national dish would be processed ham slices on white bread. No condiments!
To be fair, it would put pretty much anyone into a coma. It always knocks me out
Ok, assuming human rights and human dignity weren’t enough reason to end slavery, the answer is yes. Doro wat, awaze tibs, injera, and coffee that smells and tastes of cloves would be enough reason. Of course, not wearing corsets ever again would also be enough reason.
doro wat is fantastic.
Ever read Sunflower Sisters by Martha Hall Kelly? Imo it's the perfect literary corrective to Gone With the Wind.
Thanks for the book suggestion
Fuck yeah it was how's that even a question
I could kill a man for some ethiopian flatbread rn
mmmmmm, doro wat
"It wasn't that long ago." Yeah, it was 1939 on a soundstage in Culver City. Those were the days, huh?
Trump's favorite movie. He's old school, as in segregated schools. I anticipate his demanding the return of the Negro League and the end of "native American" types of designation.
Now I’m thinking wistfully about the kitfo and tibs my lady’s mom used to make.
most those accounts are still Russian trolls and bots
Also - yes, I do think liberating people from slavery was worth it, tasty food from around the globe is just a delightful side benefit. These really are the worst people.
Thinking all of this could be resolved peacefully if Waffle House or Cracker Barrel did some kind of southern fusion thing where they secretly replaced pancakes and biscuits with injera. "My sir, what is this delicious sourdough pancake sorcery?"
Entertainingly, that did happen. In VA, they pride themselves on their peanut soup and peanut pie. That there is African fusion food, folks. Peanuts were not planted in the Tidewater by the hand of God.
I would happily shoot confederate sympathizers for Ethiopian food.
A bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos would probably be sufficient to put Scarlett O'Hara into a coma. Doro wat would melt the skin off her face like one of the Nazis at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Hell yeah

Revere the Constitution! Expel the Confederate!
One thing I miss about living in the DMV -- it contains (last I knew) the largest group of Ethiopian folks outside Ethiopia. They've contributed wonderfully to the area. As a fed contractor, I've worked w/ many Ethiopian immigrants. My now-husband & I had many dates at Ethiopian joints in the DMV.
I'm sorry I don't understand the tie in with Gone with the Wind* and Ethiopian food? What was the intent of the poster? I'm slow. *and good riddance.
You're not the only one. I was Googling to see if there was something I had missed like I did that Coldplay jumbotron meme a few days ago.
People with bland palates shouldn't be trusted to be taste or culture makers.
Ethiopian food IS that good ♥️
Oh, but the bonnets! Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
The people who complained constantly about having to wear a mask would go insane in a society where wearing the wrong cut of tail coat could get you ejected from a restaurant.
It's like when they talk about civil war. Bro you couldn't wear a mask in wal-mart for ten minutes without having a fit, and you're gonna join a militia and follow orders in combat?
i was just rereading gone with the wind and I really do think it is the Great American Novel, but its because its virtues as literature can all be used to Trojan Horse the absolute worst of American ideology and belief into an unwary mind and shape a whole culture - even nearly a 100 years later.
It's "interesting' that their argument here is that it wasn't that long ago, but when you want to teach students about slavery and the long lasting effects of it in the country it was ancient history and we need to move on.
I'm once again lamenting the loss of my local Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant.
We’ve got lots in Oakland and Berkeley!
Oklahoma is not an easy place to find good international food.
😿
What is your favorite kind of food?
Hard to say. I like eating, and there are so many options. I can find something to like in every cuisine, AND I will try everything once, though I'll often request people not tell me what is in it until I'm done eating it.
I think that is a wonderful outlook!
She wouldn’t be able to get past the injera* (* - perhaps my favorite bread on earth)
the south will fall again
I hope so. And I live in the south
Thanks, and to clarify for others, I’m referring broadly to the radical, reactionary political and cultural movement now dragging us back to the 1800s. I personally know many good-hearted individuals in the region who agree with this.
Yes, I can see myself torching a slaver stronghold for some tasty kitfo
Fairly it might be well worth doing for half a Hershey Bar. I'd liberate a frickin' island for some Yemiser Wot
You're about to make a lot of money selling that....
Frankly my azifa...I don't give a kitfo.
