God I wish
God I wish
That camera body will outlive us all
They have a pretty good looking shop there. Though not for this camera, I think that looks like a place I'll have to make my next purchase. Thanks for sharing!
When I was young I had an M2. Great camera. I used it when I was in Ann Arbor and on the Michigan Daily photo squad. My roommate and I took photos of the Detroit Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam.
That is gorgeous.
What's film?
Looks like someone snapped it up. No longer listed on the website. Great to know about these folks, though!
Was intrigued until I saw the price tag. Sigh…maybe in another life.
yeah folks, these things are expensive! the upshot is that they’re also basically indestructible and will last the rest of your life with minimal service
I remember the golden days of Willoughby's. Spent many an hour there w my dad.
My Revere 16mm movie cameras were 70 years old when sold (because they were too heavy to accompany me into exile), and will last at least another 70 years (if the owner can find 16mm film stock). Sadly, they were sold for next to nothing to people who knew they were getting a deal.
I’d buy one, but my dad has one and the camera will outlast him, so…
my parent have one that has never been maintained at all, was freely handed to me as a kid (lol oops), and still works great. amazing cameras.
When I recently dug out my old Nikon F2 & FM2, I suddenly asked myself, "Why, especially when film is so inferior to digital on so many levels?"
The lenses though... Not even a little indestructible (nor cheap).
Used market is about to get super interesting with the tariff bumps that went in this month on anything new.
I’m not in the market (sorry, need digital!) but damn that’s beautiful.
That's where the appeal ends. But then that's all that matters to fanboys. I mean beyond fad and novelty, why would someone use a medium that is so inferior to digital on so many levels?
I see it like a record for music. There’s some inherent beauty in the “flaws” that develops from the film. I can understand the romance of the medium (as my record collection shows!). However the flexibility of photo and video is something I need. But damn, that’s a gorgeous cam.
We had M4's in the Navy. They sure were fun to play with, but not nearly as functional as our Nikons. I get the whole analogue nostalgia aesthetic. In fact, I still listen to some of my LP's from the 60's & 70's. But for me the bottom line is, the quality & practicality of the medium.
so will plenty cheaper cameras but i can’t understand how a person could be into photography enough to want a leica but not know leicas are expensive?? i don’t believe the complaints are genuine
I’ve had my m6 for better part of 25 years. Run a truly preposterous amount of film through it. Works as well as the day I got it. Pretty good use to cost ratio.
Better than my two beloved but fragile Ricoh GR1v.
Dilettantes btw the link no works
I think the complaints come from people being into photography enough to want a leica but being unable to have one...
no, they're acting like they had to click the link to find out it's expensive
Oh yes, that's fair. When I clicked the link it was actually cheaper than I expected Though starting a tweet with "no" is always a mood
just a fact! and yeah i was also surprised it was that cheap, given the service and improvements
One day I'll have a lieca. One day...
Don’t wait film is not forever
Though I will say that desperately wanting a leica and feigning surprise at their absurd cost are not at all mutually exclusive
I knew Leicas were expensive, but they still managed to shock me with a $400 iPhone grip that only works with their proprietary app.
I am not surprised just disappointed
i obsessively check local marketplaces and one day found “box of old cameras” that i secured for $650 cash same day pickup — over other people who were dickering or not as direct — and after i sold the other stuff, got a leica m2 and summicron DR 50mm for about $250
i’m saying it can be done
My daughter had a Roleiflex camera from the 50’s survive a car fire with film in camera still intact. The body was metal. All her modern cameras with plastic bodies melted. The old stuff was simply made better. You do get what you pay for.
I have a 1950s era Leica that my dad bought. The shutter has holes in it, which is not good! Can you recommend a place to fix it?
yeah! my local shop! they do repairs! www.procamera.us/repairs
Leica. When I worked for a Leica dealer we shipped repairs to Leica. leica-camera.com/en-US/servic...
god if i had the money...
wait until they find out about manual focus and metering!
And then if still not discouraged, and they take time to learn the concept of pre-visualization determined by the effects of light, exposure, and development on film, they will become better digital photographers when they get over their analogue fad.
and crucially, you can get them serviced!
that's why I have a pair of freshly serviced pentax spotmatics. i tend to use my minoltas more since the electronic conveniences are nice, but those spotmatics will work until i die or film stops existing entirely
lol I buy every reasonably priced Canon a2e I run across because they're a nightmare to service. So I have a stable if they start dying on me.
I have a Leica in my attic somewhere. maybe i should sell it.
I had an M6 titanium in the 90s but had to sell it to get through a layoff. Loved that camera.
My dad had one he bought in the late 1950s; he used it through about 1980, when he gave it to my sister. I'm not sure when she last used it, since she went digital a while back, but that camera traveled the globe for decades.
Sounds like my father's wine making equipment. It has been gathering dust in my brother's basement for years, but he refuses to part with it.
I was blessed to have worked at Fishkin Bros during the early 90's. Bob Fishkin was an awesome boss. I was just then cutting my teeth in photography. We kept the Leica's in a glass case on the counter. Just thinking about the quality of glass in a Leica lens gives me hard nipples.
Perth Amboy, NJ
My dad sold his Leica in the 80s for about $300. At the time he need the money! Thankfully he never sold his F2.
Pro Camera does repairs. You can probably find someone local to you, though, if you’re not in Cville. www.procamera.us/repairs
Good to know! I have had my Nikons serviced at LeZot in VT and my Autocord by Karl Bryan in Oregon (you can find his details on old Flickr forums)
The camera repair experts are absolute heroes!!
I love the shout out this is "I don't need a camera but you guys...!! Look!! I mean..."
Where's the slot for the SD card? 😜
I would certainly in the market for this if I could find someone interested in buying one of my children.
(I apologise if I'm the 100th person to say "Leicas are very expensive", though this sort of outpouring has an essential function in keeping Leica-users grounded & humble)
At that price I’ll stick with my Film Nikon
cool
I’m just upset I can’t afford it. 😀
But actually, thanks for the camera shop recommendation. I may not be able to afford that, but I’m always on the lookout for good camera shops.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing. Won an old Kodak digital off eBay, travel case included. Is it odd to collect old cameras? I'm starting to get a good heap.
oh jeez that's tempting
Was into it until I saw the price 👀
What it this "film" you speak of...? (Still have my Minolta XLR 700)
I love my M4 but damn am I jealous of that hotshoe mod.
A classic.
Will be Man-Jewelrying my single stroke M3 and Dual Range Summicron down at Laguna Seca and Pebble Beach this weekend 🏎️
I want it so bad.
Any best practices when buying used cameras? Just getting into the hobby. Bought a Sony RX100VII and have loved it. But been wanting to branch out more.
For where, unless you know cameras or know and trust the seller, I think the best place to buy used is KEH or MPB. You’ll pay a little more, but the return policy/warranty/inspection is worth it IMO. For what, the RX100VII is great, and can give you pro quality shots. If you want to branch out…
I assume you want lens flexibility you don’t have with a compact. Unless you’re doing video or maybe sport/wildlife, the camera body matters much less than the lens and the major brands are all solid. I’d figure out who has the lenses that will do what you want at a price you’re comfortable with.
Love when a local store is run by someone who enjoys writing thorough and thoughtful product descriptions
Sounds like you could use an M4.
