welp. so much for buying gear from japanese camera shops
welp. so much for buying gear from japanese camera shops
Just got delivery on the newly-released Fujifilm X-E5 Mirrorless Camera. We rushed to pre-order because we feared some Donald Trump nonsense would blow up Japanese imports and parcel post.
Smart
Vegetarian here not loving what’s happening to produce prices
Trump take camera Trump take mail
How is every headline in the media not “Dumbass breaks global postal system after just 7 months on the job”?
Because also grabbed the by the 🐈
Add a DJT for context.
Truly 😂
There goes the summer greeting card my Japanese friend was going to send me. All because of am man who has never had a friend.
Books from UK; egg timers from Germany. . .
Thank you trump
Wow that's huge! Had not heard this is happening! So much for countries around the world respecting the US! We're the laughing stock!
Wow, this is crazy.
OMG. Stationary supplies...pens, paper...omg
and bike stuff from Blue Lug!
They don’t use ups?
I can't buy my usual J-Pop/Rock CDs from my favorite place, so I'm bummed.
So fucking dumb. It’s hard not to be angry at all the Americans who supported this motherfucker last election cycle.
I had a new 3D printer that broke under warranty and I was amazed at how fast they could ship a replacement part direct from China. I assume that's going to be a problem now too. Globalization: you won't know how much you liked it till it's gone.
I buy my kids clothes from French and Danish clothing brands which I no longer can do. Seriously, the inability of people to buy their favored products is going to do more than annoy people. I hope they realize that Trump’s marketplace is anything but free.
When will people understand the only thing he is making great is his bank account. He is not only destroying our democracy, he has made the US a pariah. It is going to take a very long time & a lot of reform before anyone trusts America again including Americans.
Yeah :/ Not sure if the used Nikon V3 that I tried to sneak in before the deadline will actually ship at this point.
no more ebay lenses with only a small amount of fungus that doesn't affect the picture?!
My kid’s Etsy shopping has been severely hindered
I just said the exact same thing on someone else's post. I'll be honest though right now I think it might be better to save up your coin because things are about to get worse.
So much winning! No one is tired of winning yet!
I expect bookshops, too, will follow suit.
Postal services in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain and Sweden suspended the majority of their shipments to the U.S. over the weekend. Austria and the U.K. said they would stop accepting packages to the U.S. worth less than $800 as of Tuesday, August 26.
Those looking for an alternative to using Japan Post can use Japan's international courier service, U-Global Express or UGX, for shipments in compliance with U.S. customs regulations.
Take a close look. The issue that these shippers have is that they don't know how to comply with the new rules. Had the USG simply put processes in place to collect the duties shippers would not have to punch out of the business.
I just bought a Japanese Sony RX1 and some yunomi tea cups... barely made it
One of my favorite synth dealers sent out an email with the bad news :(
Trump destroys everything he touches. The orange kiss of death.
The UK will also stop sending to US. Idk where Canada sits in this, but we’re having postal issues at this time so businesses havent been using Canada Post much.
Fuck. I buy small batch Japanese handmade paper a few times a year. Guess that’s over for now.
Oh. Ok. That's really disturbing. The UK, too. Sucks, I have family that just escaped to Britian last week. Guess our Christmas gifts will be one way this year.
I feel like I'm in that part of Pitch Black when the caravan running with the power cells breaks down and all the lights have gone out. Like this is the signal we're all fucked.
Got my order in under the wire (the one on the right; the one on the left is older).
I'm considering setting up a side hustle where I smuggle high-ish end consumer goods and (otherwise) globally available vaccines into the US. Can I sign you up?
🤚🤚🤚
A black market? I’m in.
I hate living in a pariah state.
Shippers did this because they were not given guidance on how to comply with the rules. This is about incompetence not that they don't want to do business with people in the USA.
So much for Japanese camera shops, too, presumably
/me sighs….
That's OK. Dear Leader is gonna bring back Eastman Kodak and celulloid film. We'll be back to the American golden age. We're such a HOT country.
Once upon a time I fed myself reselling vintage Japanese market Transformers I bought on Japanese auction sites. It gave be the flexibility to audition and screenwrite. These tariffs and the postal shut down would have destroyed me.
Wow. We are officially a pariah
So much for getting high speed cutters for our milling machines. Let's put 200 people out of work.
This is a major blow to stationary dorks like me.
GDI I just realized I'm in this boat too! Its not even like you can buy local. The stationary stores I like either close or turn into mostly tchotchke shops... then close.
Many of them are also small business that likely get their stock the same way we order stuff from overseas - meaning they’re not getting it either.
Yeah the only thing from those stores that isn't from overseas are a few fountain pens and the locally made Ink I buy.
Yah I think we are all in deep 💩. Very sad to see we have idiots running the economy / country.
A real stationery dork would know how to spell stationery. I kid.
I’m dying on this hill the same way I got here - stationary.
yeah, i recently bought a couple of luxury japanese fountain pens because i saw this coming. (platinum and pilot)
I think it will stop me buying from jet pens :-( Luckily CultPens also ship to Switzerland and have a lot of Japanese pens and notebooks (although not as much as JP)
i live just a few blocks away from atlasstationers dot com (best stationery store in the US) and i am a true addict of pens/inks/stationery items (especially japanese). i guess i’ll be giving that hobby a rest. 😞
Ooh I hadn’t heard of them. They look good.
It’s all so sad 😞
Oh fuck. There goes my kids favorite snacks.
Stationary and pens and ink! 😭
Guess I’ll plan sabotage and subterfuge without my Hobonichi Techo in ‘26.
fuck
This has already started hurting bands who have standing merch orders that they cannot ship to the US.
BUT MY EARRINGS!!!!! FUCK TRUMP THIS IS WAR.
I think I have a shipment that slipped under.
There goes the amazing second-hand handbag market on Japanese eBay.
Having global trade was good while it lasted
I bought most of my film gear in the early 2000s when it seemed like everyone was dumping it for digital. Galaxy brain move on my part, even if it was unintentional.
So much for buying books from European publishers.
So much winning in this golden age of ours. Are we great again again yet?
my sumi ink! 😭
There's a camera store not far from where I live, and I have no idea how they stay in business. The strip club across the street closed down because of the level of street violence. Only going concerns are a motel that rents by the hour or week, store front churches, and the homeless shelter.
This will likely end them.
B&H is gonna take a huge hit.
Damn. I may have missed my chance at scoring a Bronica at a decent price.
Japan, Germany, and England are where I get most of my tea and art supplies from, so this sucks big time.
Something, something tariffs if I had to guess? So much winning.
DHL will no longer ship to the US. We aren’t going to get anything delivered here.
You can still get them to send it DHL Express, UPS Air, or FedEx Express... but the shipping cost will go way up!
Didn't DHL also suspend deliveries to the US?
The global logistics arm has not suspended, only the domestic German postal service arm. bsky.app/profile/lizt...
In Jamelle's case, I suspect camera gear is worth paying express shipment prices for, but it's not worth paying those prices for knickknacks, DVDs, etc.
It’s already so expensive 😭
Sunscreen!
The scale model community is in shambles
I was going to buy a bunch of models from Japan and Czech Republic this weekend. I guess not. I get stuff faster from Japan then NJ to GA
Enjoy the status of a hermit nation.
Or Japanese pressed records
trump could fix this, by firing the Post Master General!!!
Going to be a LOT of pissed off weeboo's
This is what it's gonna take as well as the refusal by gov's of blue states to allow the feds to violate their state's rights.
This isn't being done for political reasons, though. Companies are stopping shipments because US Customs was supposed to have until 2027 to build and prepare for this. Shippers don't want to bring stuff into the US, get refused entry by Customs, and then have to pay for storage.
If US Customs comes up with a ready-now solution, logistics companies will resume shipping stuff into the US.
Given the state of things that could be a while, yes?
GamerGate radicalized into supporting Trump and they've been rewarded with a direct attack on weebs
Gotta imagine game imports are fucked too.
Oh wow I just posted that and then started reading comments. But yes, Nintendo is a Japanese company. I don’t know about all the others but I do have a Switch and have only played Nintendo games.
Thanks Donald.
Time for Canadians, close to the border, to set up those ship-to mailboxes, just like Americans did for Canadians in the past. You'd still have to pay the duty, but at least you can get stuff, and a quick trip to lovely Canada too
The fixed gear bicycle crowd is also going to be in a panic soon...
still not sure about jumping to Leica. Cheap Mamiya 7 anyone?
Dang... I don't get a ton of JP mailed stuff, but I get a figure or game or daki cover now and then that I import. Fucking sucks :<
IKEA shoppers, is your supply chain secure?
I buy a lot of stuff off ebay that comes out of Japan. Absolutely devastating for my weird interests.
Another tariff catastrophe!
My thought exactly. Records/cds too.
Don't worry. I'm sure Nikon, Canon, and Olympus are just DYING to build factories here.
😂😂😂
man it fucking sucks living under fascism
not a doomer, but your username is on point rn
Add Australia to the list
I've constantly had my eye on some old Japanese Dragon Quest games. Guess I waited too late.
Bummer. Map Camera is so good
Anyone like old East German Exaktas?
💔
FedEx?
Why are the uk hanging back!
What?! Jet Pens though!
But JetPens cost will be 📈
And fabric!
trump take everything
Trump hate America
Thanks WP
Gamers will be pissed.
And Donald Trump thinks that Europe refers to him as the president of Europe 🙄🤦
I guess someone could start a business bulk importing those items, then piecemeal sell them from US addresses.
Who needs GDP anyway. Let's ban it.
Food. I am very worried about food, art, cosmetics, anime books, clothing….sad as hell….there is a Japanese book store in midtown east near the UN ….geez…all those Japanese stores in the Astor place area….for a lot of NYU foreign students, this is their link to home 🇯🇵 😞
Someone could make money by contacting travelers to courier things in their check-in luggage – maybe.
Congratulations on the APSA award!
This means no more stuff from Tokyo Disneyland 😔 They have the best stuff 😭
It felt like this was coming for a while. Everybody is doing everything they can to poke and prod each other and its really hurting the everyday people and small businesses.
Every day the US is less like Europe, more like El Salvador.
80% of my cameras & lenses are from Japanese sellers. Only 1 dud; a Leica M-E that wouldn't fire-got full refund. For anyone into using classic (and contemporary) photography gear, no other country has such a robust camera culture. I'm just hoping FedEx, DHL, & other shippers aren't affected.
If this is because of the logistics of tariffs, the other delivery services will not be immune.
🎯
So glad I got my bone mamma order in early!
The music instrument/part industry is about to go up in flames. Like bad.
The used market is going to do well, it'll be like after 07, when everyone got rid of any gold in the house and every mall had a "we buy gold" pop up, but with cameras.
Bring back Polaroid
