Target practice, hunting, land/stock protection from predators, 3 gun competition, plenty of reason to own an AR-15 that has nothing to do with ending people. A mini-14 can be just as deadly as an AR there's all kinds of other similar auto guns but ARs are just the scariest looking.

As a veteran, I will be the first to say we need to ban assault-style weapons. For hunting, they are not optimal compared to standard lead-senders. For things like target practice, etc, there are ranges. The risk of owning them is too high.

People who don't lock up their guns who get them stolen and used against others should be locked up with the shooters.

I own plenty of guns only time they've hurt someone is myself, I got hit with spall from shooting my British 303. For the most part they sit gathering dust and I only think about them when I'm going to the range. Guns are tools, tools get misused everyday. People are the problem, we need better laws
