It means that credit card companies and loan agencies, anyone who might run a credit check to open accounts cannot open those accounts if your credit is frozen. So if someone has your SS# and tries to open an account, they can’t.

But you can use your credit cards as usual?

Yes. You can still use your existing credit cards with your existing credit line. You can also transfer the credit line limits among the cards from the same bank. We do this regularly to keep the limit/losses low on the cards we use daily for smaller expenses.

Beware that your FICO will drop instantly if you make a large purchase on a card with a smaller credit line. The percent of credit used for FICO is calculated per card, NOT per your entire credit line with that bank.

Thank you for that. How do you freeze your credit? Also, my son is in college and since they've got the federal grant information, we're concerned with his information as well. If we freeze his, can he still receive his financial aid and federal grants?

If you go to each of the credit bureau websites it should tell you how to do this. I don’t know if they pull credit reports for student loans and grants. Does anyone on here known the answer?
