If not outright rotten at the top, it's clear that many of our main news platforms are at least as addicted to corrosive outrage as any foaming, right-wing opinion peddler. Effectively they're campaigning, so they really should be receiving the same scrutiny and ire as divisive politicians.
Of course I see and hear plenty of people doing a great job of calling it out here and in podcasts, but how many average voters are anywhere near engaged enough to pay that sort of attention to what they're being hosed with?
I've yet to see a progressive leader with the spine to really tackle this and Christ alone knows how you'd begin, but I think it's a problem that's big enough to distort and exacerbate every other major issue, so it really needs to be a priority.
