💥 Nick Thomas-Symonds: "Nigel Farage will take a sledge hammer to any progress we make. And that is purposeful. Because, apart from his pension package, he cannot bring himself to have any relationship with the EU. Nigel Farage wants Britain to fail. His model of politics depends on it." 💥

He's a copy of Trump. Where Trump (inexplicably?) admires Putin to the detriment of USA & Europe, likewise Farage worships Trump to the detriment of the UK & Europe.

Seems pretty direct, simple, and sexy to me. Maybe tuning into a random bit in the middle of a speech is not enough to form a journalistic judgment. Then again, one senses that judgment is pre-formed, from higher bits of the organisation.

Imagine if Lab had a Culture Secretary who knew it was their job to ensure the broadcast media held to their professed standards of balance and integrity? One who looked again at a cross-media ownership law. Instead Labour has lazy Lisa Nandy who hates the job and has zero interest in it.

You think she can change the board at the BBC with a click of the fingers ?They are independent from direct government and only answerable to Offcom. You can argue she needs to give them more power, but the idea she can just swan in and tell them to get their act together is risible nonsense.

The Culture Sec has the most influence on the BBC of any government minister. Not least because she's in charge of the charter renewal. I think you need to stop throwing nonsense around yourself, frankly.

Well the Charter is up for renewal in 2027 so I wouldn’t be doing your lap of honour quite yet.

Which means, by definition, she has an enormous amount of influence right now and is not using it.

No she can criticise (which she has regularly done to Tim Davie) and she can ask for him to be sacked(she asked and was criticised heavily) but has no direct control and cannot do it herself. You are conflating influence and the ability to be able to actually do anything.

By your lights, no government can do anything. This is palpable nonsense. How do you imagine Davie and indeed Robbie Gibb got their current gigs? Because they were palatable to the then Tory government. There is a tiny window to avoid a Farage govt. Nandy's inactivity is helping blow it.

Believe you me, if Nandy stood up and said "I'm looking at a Netflix model for the future funding of the BBC", she'd have their attention PDQ. This is negligence. Just because Nandy's ill-suited to the gig and basically lazy. Thangam Debbonaire would have been far better.

winstons25.bsky.social @winstons25.bsky.social

Well, firstly the BBC isn’t just the news division ,secondly threatening to change the funding model was the threat the Tories used and there are an awful lot of them wouldn’t be unhappy about that.Your simplistic presumption that she is just lazy is childish, she clearly isn’t .

If not outright rotten at the top, it's clear that many of our main news platforms are at least as addicted to corrosive outrage as any foaming, right-wing opinion peddler. Effectively they're campaigning, so they really should be receiving the same scrutiny and ire as divisive politicians.

Of course I see and hear plenty of people doing a great job of calling it out here and in podcasts, but how many average voters are anywhere near engaged enough to pay that sort of attention to what they're being hosed with?

I've yet to see a progressive leader with the spine to really tackle this and Christ alone knows how you'd begin, but I think it's a problem that's big enough to distort and exacerbate every other major issue, so it really needs to be a priority.
