SERIOUSLY, WATCH THIS: If you really want to understand how SUVs and pick-up trucks have ended up being MOST of the vehicles out there in cities, and the absolutely INSANE consequences of that, watch this easy-to-watch video by Not Just Bikes. Then share it as much as you can. youtu.be/jN7mSXMruEo

Just a reminder that the American auto manufacturers conspired, executed, and were convicted of a plan to systematically destroy the public transport systems of US cities, and were ultimately fined $1.

I require a Ute 4WD for my farm work, my current one is 11 years old, and at least 120mm lower at the front of the hood. I am holding on to the old ute, as I can't in good faith buy one of these ridiculous things. Really there is no alternative from any brand on the market.

People who actually use trucks for work in North America tend to buy older models, if they're available, because most of the trucks nowadays don't actually have a long enough bed to fit construction materials.

IMPORTANT: When cities create new parking strategies, they should specifically state that they will NOT expand required parking space sizes to accommodate bigger personal vehicles. Just like more lanes induce more driving, bigger parking spaces induce bigger vehicle purchases.

My friend actually needs a big truck....I borrowed it to take some large items to our daughter's house 5 hours away. We stopped for a coffee along the way and I almost panicked when I saw there were people walking across the parking lot and I wasn't completely able to see them.

Massive vehicles in normal car parks mean that other drivers get squeezed. Drivers of monster cars don’t appear particularly considerate. Two thoughts, tax them on purchase and / or have large spaces at the far end of the car park.

A man in a pickup truck parked across the line in a car park. I parked next to him, making it impossible to reenter the truck from the drivers side. He asks “Can’t you park elsewhere?” I reply “Can’t you park inside the lines?” and walk away.

It never ceases to amaze me how city people don't understand that when you don't live in a metropolis with 24/7 bus service and everthing is closeby that people out in the suburbs/country need to travel great distances, often in dangerous conditions and that the big vehicles are good for our safety.

Nope. That's just bullshit. Single vehicle accidents kill people on country roads and being in a giant wankpanzer does nothing to improve collision safety when hitting trees or rolling off a shoulder.

It's the false sense of higher status (and safety) that's elevating the selling of these monsters. A good outcome of shaming the cybertruck hopefully can infect the suv sales. Also higher fuel prices might do the same :).

I've been saying this for ages. I'd like my local council (and government) to do something about them in Belgium where we're seeing more and more of them appearing. I made a petition, but no supporters until now. ☹️ www.petitions.net/monster_pick...

Same here in Liège. We see more and more of these monstrous trucks. And, to the local council, this is an absolute non-issue. An invisible topic. Something that just doesn’t exist in their mind.

Joe Higham @joehigham.bsky.social

Totally agree. I just don't know what to do, hence my petition. Maybe next I'll just write to the commune (1030), but I guess 1 letter/email won't do much.

Liège.bike @liege.bike

I also guess it wouldn’t do much, unfortunately. But the more I think about it, the more I think having incompetent municipal authorities is not the biggest problem. I’m far more worried about regular people inventing excuses for allowing these trucks, even when these people do not own a car.

avatar
Joe Higham @joehigham.bsky.social

Yes, you're right. But, I think there must be some way of bringing this to the attention of councils and governments. I saw in the Guardian an article about the size causing parking problems. Which is at least an argument to start from, even if that's not the worst bit.

may 21, 2025, 4:22 am • 1 0 • view
avatar
Liège.bike @liege.bike

If I bring this argument to my local council, I’m afraid the only answer that will come to their mind is “let’s make more, bigger parking spots” (not kidding). That said, I would be a bit more hopeful if I was living in some of the Brussels’ municipalities, so it may be worth trying.
