No worries. If trump has his way then there won't be any need for elections
Fox News literally made half of America political junkies over the course of 40 years and that’s why they are winning now. It’s about time Dems started thinking about politics as much as they have lol.
What is fucking wrong with the Atlantic lately?! I’m beginning to ponder ending my subscription. Here’s the article, gifted. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Thank you for sharing the actual article. Good to be able to read it.
I tried to read the article, but it’s behind a payroll. What a ridiculous headline.
I posted a free link higher in this thread.
Thank you. I read it. I don’t like to comment if I haven’t read an article. It’s pretty typical for the headline to be misleading - like this one. Terrible headline and while I don’t agree with everything written there are some valid points.
This is true. I started noticing it when the idea of the “Rogan on the Left” became a thing. One nitpick I have: it's not that Harris was wrong about the optics of being a female politician and having hobbies—it's that she was facing a “damned if you do, damned if you don't” situation.
I really don’t care about democratic shortcomings because republicans are bringing a tsunami of hate, greed and lawlessness
And how is this quote at all productive in the middle of the fight to preserve democracy?
So Republicans will be angry when the ship starts sinking and blame Democrats for not doing anything when they knew what was happening.
And a party of 100% DO NOTHINGS will struggle to win - you are allowing the country to be destroyed & worse - under tyrannical, fascist rule- you are worse than worthless - we hired you to step up in our stead & you refuse - why? just why? @schumer.senate.gov @whitehouse.senate.gov @aoc.bsky.social
“Democrats should be oblivious, uninformed cult-ish sheep like Republican voters!” That stupidity earned @theatlantic.com a probably much overdue UNFOLLOW.
This is how many words by Litt that just say democrats try to stay informed and republicans don’t bother?
Because yours doesn't make Democrats sound stupid and Republicans smart.
To all those people who "don't do politics", that's OK. But rest assured, politics will do you.
The Atlantic needs to figure out why it keeps blaming the party that is trying to save democracy when it could - very legitimately - question the "activities" of the party trying to lead the US into autocratic rule.
I usually don't this, but since several people in this thread appear to be reacting to this link without having read the article, here's a gift link:
Thanks for this. I found the article to be a bit of a stretch. There was a somewhat tortured attempt to blame Dems for being willing to put in the work of understanding the political implications of our complex world. 'Be like the grasshopper, singing and dancing--not like the boring old ant!'
That said: sure, the more enthusiasms a person has, the more people with those same enthusiasms they may be able to reach.
Yeah, I didn't think it intended to blame Dems for their focus on policy & politics such as encourage them to do more to appeal to the huge fraction of the electorate who are tuned out. When what they have to offer is only reaching the politically engaged, they have less chance of winning elections.
Fair enough.
Thank you!
Exactly.
Interesting. I thought during the election that Harris had the right idea by turning her rallies basically into rock festivals. She just got started too late.
That's part of what the Atlantic article is saying. That if Dem candidates want to reach the voters who are tuned out of politics, they need to align themselves more with currents in popular culture—sports, music, & so on.
Yeah, I got that. I was using her as an example. 😎
Understood.
😎
Thanks for the gift link. Is it me or does the Atlantic still demand that I have an account to read it?
Dems are becoming political junkies because our lives depend on being informed on what our elected reps are (or are not) doing.
you need disposable income to have hobbies. working class does not have that. now why the working class is not voting democrat you'd have to ask yourself and look at what you've done to make that happen.
You can typically start MANY hobbies for 20-30 bucks or less. Many crafts have almost no startup or running costs. Working class people can and do have hobbies.
then you need free time. depending on your job, you may not have that.
I don't care how busy you are everyone can find an hour or so a week. Some hobbies don't even require it to be contiguous. If you are poor and busy it limits the hobbies you can have, but doesn't preclude you from the concept.
It’s hard to ignore a fire coming at you. Easier to forget about it when it’s safely moving away from you.
I don't think this metaphor works, unless the fire coming for GOP voters had magical healing powers and also made their air and water cleaner
What fire from this Republican government is aimed at the right?
I thought you were saying that Republican voters can afford to ignore politics because their guy won
If anyone can they can! When they do pay attention it’s to applaud the bastards and ask for more lib ownership.
A bunch actually - *Healthcare crisis in rural America due to reduced Medicaid funding *shutting down FEMA during hurricane season *40% of agricultural workers are undocumented- how will that impact rural America? *interest rates as Treasuries are downgraded by Moody
As long as they think they’re owning the libs they are good with all of that. Apparently. Read the polls on Trump.
More like they don't know about any of that, because once people actually know what's in the bill, the vast majority don't like it
That’s the problem. Look how many pages it is. Look at how many pages in the P2025 playbook. Both are longer than “War and Peace” and less interesting.
amp.cnn.com/cnn/2025/06/...
31% on that poll. That’s almost one third of Americans.
And yet 69% against is not a small number
Certainly not. But when 1 in 3 is a strong supporter it’s not insignificant. Especially to the ruling party that basically can’t be overruled even using procedure.
Anecdotal - but in our discussions with our gardener (born in Mexico). Prior to the election he was upset with Biden for letting Venezuelans in on amnesty. Those Venezuelans got $1000/month housing assistance. He was pissed - why didn’t he get assistance? …
Remember when it was the Biden administration and everybody was worried because only Republicans were fired up about getting new and young people to run for office?
No one would rather be worrying about the collapse of democracy, but that’s what drew us to The Democratic Party. MAGA has *never* really cared about politics, they’re just concerned with provincial grievances. Trump is the attack dog that lets them get back to their huntin and fishin, worry free.
The Atlantic has become ridiculous.
