Democrats are relying on a familiar strategy for key 2026 Senate races: old candidates. @russellberman.bsky.social on why the party thinks it’s the best option:

Why are we running only old candidates? We need young ones as well.

Because old ones win. Young candidates get picked apart by young voters expecting perfection. Especially if they are female and not white.

Don’t seek reelection if your new term will begin after age 70 (72? 75?) seems like a good practice.

Mamdani lives in New York. He is far from rich. I don't understand why people think you need to be poor to be a socialist. A billionaire proposing to decimate his own wealth in favor of socialist policies could just walk into the White House.

NY Post once again reeking of desperation. “He’s sooo rich with his… $142k salary!!!!”… as if you have to be poor to support more and better social services.

A sweeping generalization. Every dem district needs to present a sure-bet candidate that WILL win. Not old, not young but a WINNER

But what we are trying to avoid is those winners dying within the first few months of their terms, like what happened to 3 dems in Congress in 2025 (two of whom were diagnosed with cancer before elected).

I'm 64, and people my age have no business being in government. We need energetic young candidates with bold new ideas. Old white men have run things for far too long. Let's get some bright young people in there and watch them change the world.

The senate is a particularly difficult beast. Only 1/3 of the seats are up at a specific time and unless some of those seats happen to be among rising stars, your best bet is to run people with a proven record of winning. We need to fill the House with youthful energy before we can in the Senate.

The Democrats would rather be the captain of a sinking ship before they'll let someone young take control. A mistake they will be content to make until all is ash and rubble. The biggest thing that helped Trump win wasn't trump voters, it was apathetic leftists. Looks like we're inf or a repeat.

Being critical of Dems political strategy is a waste of time. Due to Trump & team it’s no longer “politics as usual”. Trump’s greed/incompetence/vindictiveness plus loyalists he’s chosen to serve with are blatantly incompetent. Money-making-media critical of Dems are either very rich or very stupid.

Harris won Maine by 7 points No Republican presidential candidate has won there since 1988 And the only candidate Democrats even seem to be considering to challenge Collins is a 77 year old who doesn’t want to do it This should be a wakeup call to the party. This isn’t working.
