Kate Riley’s debut novel, "Ruth," depicts the life of a woman in a repressive sect without condescension. Which leads Hillary Kelly to ask: Can a woman be happy without autonomy?

NO. Maybe brainwashed into believing she is because she knows nothing else.

Sure, "a" woman can. But it won't have anything to do with being a woman. Rephrase the question to can WOMEN be happy without autonomy, and clearly the answer is NO.

You can find joy anywhere but peace, true inner peace can not be found without personal freedom.

Slavery is what you’re describing. Now re-ask the question and see how ridiculous it was in the first place.
