I was just reading a thread on Reddit about the surprisingly common rural crime of shooting people in their backyards and claiming that it was an accident and the shooter can't be prosecuted because the victim was not wearing an orange safety jacket. On their own property.
The USA combination of stand your ground laws, police allowed to be in civilian clothing and conduct no-knock entries and the above mentioned habit of stray bullets not being accounted for is fucking insane. I'll take "freedom from harm" over "freedom to harm" everyday
My parents lived in rural IL & one day when I was a kid a large bullet showed up in the side of our house, the day before we were having my sister’s birthday party right where the bullet struck. Cops didn’t care, said someone was probably “practicing” and “accidentally shot our house”
Had that happen out here in rural Maryland. Never happened to us in Baltimore City or Vallejo, CA, though.
Yep, since I’ve lived in Chicago nothing of the same nature has ever happened 🤷♂️
We used to joke about hunting season "accidents". Unfortunately our beautiful rural state now has guns incidents weekly and murder rate has increased, although still extremely low. My daughter was in NYC in July. She was perfectly safe even when lost in a 'bad' neighborhood.
Depending on the neighbourhood, the "bad" would rather redirect tourists away than let them witness or get into crossfire which would bring more fuzz to the area. I'd rather be mugged by a rando than a cop. I love joking about who deserves to go hunting with Dick Cheney. Has he finally died?
