Former Gov. David Patterson (D-NY) is the epitome of an “accidental governor”. He was Minority Leader in the NY State Senate in 2006 when he signed on to run for LG under Eliot Spitzer. He became Governor when Spitzer resigned amid his prostitution scandal. Patterson didn’t run for his own term.
