I used the carry a pocket knife around and it was useful as hell. Only stopped because I started working places where you weren't allowed to have it.

I used to carry a large Swiss army knife everywhere I could. It was awesome. Now I carry a small one. Still pretty great. You never know when you'll need scissors, a Phillips head screwdriver, etc.
I used to as well (until I moved to Britain lol) but even today I carry something like this. Do I really need it? Nope. Am I happy when I find an opportunity to use it (that I could have otherwise still perfectly managed to do, but spending a bit more time and effort)? Yep.
Must say fantasies of "I need a knife as it is a WEAPON" were cured by a) learning how to actually fight; b) after getting into a situation where I had a knife and it didn't change anything.
I think a legit pocket knife has a lot of practical uses. I also think a lot of dudes carry knives around thinking their Kali practitioners who won’t have that knife taken, and used against them, if something were to pop off.
Compromise: 1.) regularly carrying a pocket knife is cool and normal 2.) posting to reddit that you regularly carry a pocket knife is performative and cringe.
The reddit post is cringe as hell, but I submit that carrying a knife is not a masculinity thing. Like I'm genuinely annoyed sometimes that I can't really carry one around anymore.
I have a few of these in various backpacks and workbags. Useful as hell.
I don't know if I live a weird life, but I feel like I'm cutting open zip ties all the damn time.
genuinely asking, what can a pocket knife do that u can’t just do with keys
I mean... I mention zip ties here. Which I know you can technically do with keys but it's a pain in the ass, and half the time I try to open one with keys I end up grabbing a knife
I guess an important bit of additional info here is that I'm a nail biter, so I guess I probably used it for a lot of stuff you'd just use your fingernails for.
Actually reading the replies and it seems to be taken as a given that people carry these knives for self defense (terrible idea, but almost certainly not true), and then a bunch of suggestions for... other knives people can carry? Really not understanding the terms of the debate ig
There are lots of situations where you don’t need a knife, but it’s really useful. A humorous example: you don’t need a knife to eat a steak, but…
Super awkward moment when you forget you have a pocket knife in your backpack and you arrive at federal court. They made me throw it away
I was gifted a rather expensive pocket knife from someone who worked security. They apparently end up with buckets and buckets of them.
I have a nifty little multi tool with a little knife, screw drivers, tweezers, and scissors. The scissors are the primary tool on it.
I’ve carried various forms of pocket knife for 25 years (Eagle Scout). Recently switched back to my trusty Victorinox explicitly because it’s less “tactical” and not likely to get me labeled some kind of right wing nutjob.
For some reason pocket knives are inter-generational bequest items between men. I still have my grandfather's.
That is what watches are for, but I think knives also work (folding knives had *massively* improved since the previous generation's prime though).
I haven't worn a watch since I got my first mobile phone.
Very common, like with a knife, you don't really need it. But try if you want, it is fun.
I stopped wearing a watch for years, but started again when they became extensions of your phone
I try to explain why I love mechanical watches, it is because they are are already obsolete and so won't disappear in the future (otherwise they would have already). While any electronic device has to be replaced every few years even if it works).
FFS, "IF I try".
They are also permissible male fashion accessories that don't look too forced to an outsider, but can tell a lot to someone who has an eye for them. A silly game but fun to play. And I actually want to know time and don't want to see notifications of which there are too many already.
Finally because they are obsolete already and don't change a lot, I can wear my dad's and granddad's watches. And they are worn on the wrist so are personal. Not many other items with the same characteristics.
My main reason for getting a smart watch is that it also functions as an effective pedometer and exercise tracker. All else equal I'd prefer a mechanical watch, but also would never want to spend real money on one if I could get more art supplies or computer equipment instead
For some reason (probably neurodivergent-related) I always feel uncomfortable when wearing a wristwatch and I will take it off at the slightest provocation. I don't miss them.
Granted I’m getting older and should probably get reading glasses, but I find it hard to believe someone regularly reads a Bible that small.
I've carried a Leatherman for decades. Use it all the time. Forgot I had it on, & TSA mailed it to me, on their nickel. Of course, I'm privileged, so that might have something to do with it.
This is one of those values that my Dad was very specifically like 'as a grown man you should carry a pocket knife cause you never know what stuff it may come in handy for'. Granted, I do not anymore, but it's a thing he def felt was important for practical, not weirdo reasons. I doubt it's uncommon
