It's a lot like the dynamic that undergirded much of medieval kingship: "we want all this trouble and instability to end, so if you can be *just* sane and fair enough that most people can accept your rule, that's really enough for us."

Don't give 'em ideas. 😄
I think his core supporters like him because he never chills out, like he would quickly lose his base if he started acting too fairly or sanely.
Our concept of Trump is mediated through the fact that he is by far the most fascist and insane man ever to be president, also his supporters are desperately waiting for Trump to make an absolute mockery of the next Serious Person to distract them from the trainwreck.
Thankfully, I guess, he just can't help but send troops into the streets to rough up black people, and for that reason I think he'll fail.
Trump is more Richard II than Henry IV, we'll put it that way
He probably could still do all of that if it weren't for the tariffs. The people would be more willing to accept it all if the economy was still humming along.
I don't think it's a coincidence that he's incapable of this, though. Seems to me that the Republican primary electorate doesn't want someone tempermentally capable of a more subtle play, because the big dramatic show where he gives everyone the finger is what they like
Even then, msm has made it clear you can still do completely psychotic and illegal shit, just gotta keep within reason and they’ll sane wash it for you
