DC statehood is the squishy moderate position. DC split up into 400 states so that we can reform the Constitution is the correct position. But nobody will realize that until it's too late

DC is a real place with real people living in it, I don't think you can assume they will go along radical constitutional reform plan just because they are mostly registered Democrats, especially since your first step was fucking up their local governance by splitting them into tiny states.

There are benefits and detriments to both (DC as 400 states, admitting breakaway regions). DC is more surefire and obviously constitutional, but the latter (might) be perceived as more legitimate by the broader public anyway
