I just don't get it. I can't possibly be the only person in this country who wants a car like this. And things like the Ioniq 9 S prove that there's no engineering limitation preventing this. They just apparently don't care about this market at all.

Only person? no. <4% of the market? yes. Carmakers are just trying to survive the transition now so the bulk of their effort is on the meat of the market. Love what the IONIQ 9's doing, I can't think of a vehicle with as much room for <$500/mo with captains chairs on a $3k down lease!

Release an electric car with 6+ seats that can accommodate car seats without effectively blocking access to the seats in the rear for $50k or less challenge 2025. Difficulty level: impossible

There was a period I had 3 kids in full car seats (not boosters). Forced me into an extended SUV. Ridiculous.

Ugh, VW ID. Buzz is just a touch too expensive. I've seen a few in the wild and it's honestly growing on me.

I'd say it's more than a touch. Especially when you consider that the pretty, colorful versions are an extra 5k or something

Yeah, you're right. In a normal world though we could hope for buying used versions in a few years that'd hit your price point

That, and the MSRP fixed focus isn't keeping pace with an industry entirely focused on lease deals for EVs, their focus isn't bringing down MSRP, it's leverage with leasing. Note the steel grey. Goal's achievable <$500/mo easy in many states.

As a guy who just bought an EV, I honestly think most EV buyers are just not also that concerned about accommodating kids/"family car" buyers are still not that interested in EVs. I think we're a few years away from them being mainstream enough to start changing on this front though.

Kia has an electric minivan, there are just no plans yet (AFAIK) to bring it to the US. Maybe everyone thinks only SUVs & trucks can sell here. www.kia.com/uk/pbv/premi...

A lot of these cars are technically SUVs. I don't care about the form factor, I just care about the number of seats. I need to be able to ferry my in-laws around while also seeding my children, preferably without having to drive two cars everywhere.

Have you considered leasing? I had never leased before in my life, but leased my current EV because the deals were too good to pass up. From a quick look at LeaseHackr, you can get an EV9 for well under $500 per month.

Zamafir @zamafir.bsky.social

The leases are amazing, I don't think there's anything remotely close to the IONIQ 9 in an EV that you can lease for <$500 month without some crazy down! IONIQ 9 LTD: 3k, 10k/36, $443/mo R1S (no captains): 3k, 10k/36, $1029/mo (lol) Vistiq (capitan opt): 3k, 10/36k, $956/mo (lol)

It's just the lease calc on their site, so it'll exclude TT&L, but dealers should be able to match it with TT&L.

Are you in the north east? Might get close to $500 on the EV9 Land (We've got an EV9 GT, way more on the lease than the crazy deals right now, I'd suggest springing for the IONIQ 9 if it can be made to pencil out).

I know Kia and Hyundai are the same company. Does the EV9 have a bench second row? Or captain seats? Or both depending on trim level? Having captain seats is super important here

aug 26, 2025, 10:46 pm • 2 0 • view
avatar
JB stan account @johnbrownstan.bsky.social

Same as Hyundai, the captain seat option only opens up at higher trim levels for reasons that are completely inexplicable. This one also isn't eligible for the soon expiring EV tax credit. So ultimately too expensive for what it is

It looks like at least some of the trims have second row captains chairs. LeaseHackr is a great resource for advice and reports of deals. There are also listings and reviews for reputable brokers in your area. FWIW I used a broker and had a great experience but you can do it on your own too.
