I live on a farm in the Midwest. Among other delicacies, raccoons eat cat food, dog food, ground corn, soybean pellets, medication for animals, sweet corn, tomatoes, melons, fish, worms, and baby kittens. At least here they are getting veg and protein because we don't plant doughnuts in the garden.

One of my neighbors used to feed the raccoons grapes or let them come in her kitchen window from her fire escape to get peanuts in a shell from a can she kept there. They are so incredibly curious and FAST. One grabbed my hand and began inspecting it. Thank God I didn't get bitten.

We had a "pet" racoon! For about 6 months. Her name was rockette 🦝

I once had a mother raccoon and three babies come up to my kitchen window and all I could see were three little heads, peering over the sill. It was magical. They are so interesting.

The one we had would climb a tree to get on the fire escape, then walk up the fire escape to come to our kitchen window. Finally, I fed her cat chow which she loved.

Any wild living raccoon at anytime has a possibility of being rabid. Raccoons don't hunt exclusively at night. I see them from time to time in daylight at the creek drinking water or catching fish/frogs.

I live on 20 heavily wooded acres in remote, rural America. I feed the raccoons and possums all my leftovers. In return, they keep the wood ticks under control. Yes. They eat ticks! I almost never find ticks and never fleas on my cats and dogs. Tick and flea control without medication!

Skunks eat ticks too. Been around tons of skunks and have never gotten sprayed.

My dog was sprayed once. What a stench! Thankfully, we had peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent on hand for her bath.

We're only on 9 heavily wooded acres in a rural area in the USA. We have raccoons, but haven't seen any possums. The critters here seem to fare well without anything from us. Wouldn't want to feed them junk food. They're welcome here, for the reason you stated.

Possums and Opossums are the ugliest, cutest, most curious marsupials on Earth. My dog attacked one when he came on the porch and within 10 seconds or so he played dead and she stopped. I got her inside the house and within a few minutes the possum lumbered off the porch. Uninjured! 👏👏

I love opossums! I tell people all the time they are harmless to people and important to the local ecosystem.

My sister's neighbor feeds raccoons. He had about 30 that shoe up on his porch every night. It really drives her nuts. They get really bold and come up to anyone looking for food.

We used to have an indoor / outdoor cat so we’d leave out food and water. The raccoons would always wash thier paws in the water. They’d come to the back door and look in if the food bowl was empty.
