It can take two years for an elephant to fully learn to use their trunk. It's a very complex limb.

It takes the calf two years to learn how to use its trunk (the trunk is the equivalent of our fingers) - that calf is less than year as it can fit under its mother who uses her body to protect the calf from the sun. Elephants’ skin is very sensitive so they use mud as their version of sunscreen
