Okay, so... Yes, this is cute. This is also extremely rare. Note that the brown foal is noticeably smaller than the red one...that foal will likely be slightly stunted and not reach full genetic height. This is extremely rare. Equine twins where both survive. Is. Extremely. Rare. Responsible

breeders selectively abort the smaller twin when twins are detected on ultrasound. Unlike ruminants, horses are not meant to have more than one foal. Humans aren't great at it either, but we do much better than horses. The most common outcome of a twin conception in equines is early pregnancy

loss. Other outcomes that are all far more common than this are: Late pregnancy loss. The death of at least one animal, and potentially all three, in foaling. One or both twins being extremely weak (again, note how much smaller the brown foal is than the red one, although it seems otherwise

healthy. As already mentioned, this foal will likely not reach its full genetic height). Twins often need extensive around-the-clock care. The mare often retains the placenta and requires treatment for that. Note that I am not saying this mare was owned by an irresponsible breeder.

It's fairly common for mares, especially maidens, to show little sign of pregnancy until close to full term, meaning that it's possible they didn't know she was pregnant until it was too late to abort the smaller foal or even until she went into labor. But when people squee over twins, I always

feel the need to come in. These foals are lucky. One of them is less lucky than the other, but will likely survive and have a normal life. That is a great outcome. It is extremely rare.
