I read a report a couple years ago that elephants brains light up (in MRI scans) when they see people in the same way human brains light up when they see puppies. And, I think that’s the most wonderful bit of research. Elephants think we’re adorable!

That baby elephant thinks he's a lap dog! I saw a documentary about dogs which told of an experiment to clarify if dogs love us because we feed them, or love them. Their brains lit up for people (not carrying food) more than they did for food. I love the idea of elephant brains lighting up for us!

Elephants are extremely protective of young, but emotionally intelligent enough to understand this interaction clearly as a good one. This would be a nightmare with many other animals. A silverback gorilla would have stepped in violently by now.
