That is part of the Lee myth. It is false. He just lost.
He was no more a gentleman than Grant (though Grant was not very gentlemanly when he drank, I will give you that).

And I don't feel the need to over-demonize Lee. He chose to serve an evil cause, though. And that is a taint he chose to bear.
And Marshall is, objectively, right about who the truly great commanders were in the war (though the Union also had some terrible ones, of course).
Grant was not a cream of West Point type. But he did graduate from West Point.
