Yes, quite. Oxford-Hachette dictionary only suggests “forcer quelqu’un à prendre la taureau par les cornes” (i.e. make someone take the bull by the horns). I can find no reference to it under “marmite” either.

With apologies for being that person, it is not clear how any of these imply being thrown in at the deep end. Indeed, there are so few usages of “plongé” that Google has auto-corrected it to “plonger”, and even then, the meaning seems to be confined in a fairly literal sense to food.
