Why 20 years? Why not 30? Why not 60 years ago when Israel deliberately sank the USS Liberty, killing 34 sailors and injuring hundreds more, and the US covered it up. They do stuff that we don't like the optics of, but it's acceptable because stirring the pot would mean losing our beachhead.

Israel takes full advantage of this privileged status, absolutely. That said, this is basically what the US does all over the world. We prop up fringe radical groups to fight our wars to produce favorable trade conditions. This is what empires do.
