I actually had an idea like this cause my flat pedals never feel at all large enough. my idea was rebar or spring steel (harvested from bedsprings from a mattress) or even both, rebar outer frame with spring steel for the foot to rest on.

beartrap not bearclaw. Many basic cheap pedals you might find on a 90s mtb or even granny bike are constructed in the same way tho the size of the base platform varies.
If you got the means to do proper metalwork i think making a cage for oldschool pedals would be a good idea. Bearclaw type mtb pedals or random oldschool pedals often have thin metal screwed to a small pedalbody. Make that part in bigger then screw onto.
