Step away from the lathe of heaven, Philip Stone, please.

A screenshot from The Bookseller magazine showing Nielsen's philip stone in an awesome shirt saying that AI is likely to produce a bestseller by 2030, at the marketing and publicity conference.

No AI book will ever be a bestseller or even a respectable seller, period, because if AI is ever accepted in the literature realm everyone will just make their own from the same prompt rather than buy someone else's.

This is something the AI pushers fail to understand. They don't realize that even if they succeed, they won't be the only ones with AI. It's solipsism, a complete inability to recognize that other people also exist with consciousnesses same as them.

If AI "succeeds" at literature, it will merely mean that literature itself loses all meaning and no-one will read.

Honestly, the way sales and places on those list can seemingly be bought, I bet it takes less time.

No-one has ever looked at the millennia-old tradition of storytelling and thought "if only I had a machine to do this for me so I could spend more time doing data entry."

For clarity this is not Stone's fault, I just want people to not speak in front of the AI Good Neighbours in case things that would not have come to pass will come to be...

The infinite monkey theory, only it's using the finite energy resources of our planet. Also we already have writers that can break your heart and make your soul transcend with joy, let's not kill them and all of us for this absolute shite.

As a new writer and someone who wants to work in the publishing industry, what the hell do I do in this climate 😭 feels like all the resources for onboarding new blood is being diverted towards AI

This does seem quite a safe bet, whether it's for novelty value, or just because AI replaces a ghost writer on a Celeb book or similar. The real worry would be if AI came to dominate the best sellers, which seems much less likely.

doesn't even need to be novelty or value. Could just be a company bulk buying to *get it on the best seller list*, which already happens.

what he means is that by 2030, the AI at nielsoniq will be selecting a book written by AI that's probably a conservative estimate

Genuinely the only way I see this happening is as a blatant marketing stunt. Someone will buy up copies of the book they generated so they can have the headlines as the person or company that did it.

Having worked in publishing I can see it happening all too well sadly. It would just take a tik tok/insert 2030 social media craze carrying it into the bestseller list before anyone would even know it was AI...

Good point. It can already write pretty convincing prose, which an editor could wrangle into something vaguely readable. It's just that the writing is cliched and pedestrian, lacking surprise, nuance, or heart and soul. But so are plenty of existing celebrity books.

I guess Ghost Writers are probably out of luck in the future. Not that I'd every think of buying a celeb's biography anyway - if I want fiction then I'll buy fiction.

Given that "Bestseller" is a marketing term and a lot of things can make the best-seller list just by being bought in bulk, thus manipulating their place onto it? Frankly I'm surprised an AI company HASN'T done this yet.
