I'm curious to know if they're gonna keep continuity with the comics. I hope not cos that had some serious Whedon being gross (Xander getting off with Dawn ew ew ew ew) #Buffyreboot

Yes I assume they'll have to jettison the comics generally (part of the point of them was to do stuff too expensive for tv), though I did love Harmony as a reality star, and I think there's space to play around with vampire influencers etc.
I would love Harmony at some point.
So would I, but it's hard to see how they bring any of the vampires back with the visible aging (though how funny would it be if the shanshu prophecy beneficiary was Harmony!)
Turns out Wesley mistranslated Sole as Soul, and Harmony happened to be wearing Loubotins at the key moment...
HAAAA
ok that's my new headcanon
And surely it’s time they had a Slayer soundtrack. Expendable Youth, or South of Heaven maybe?
My wish for a theme song is this song Dana Dentata's Pantychrist #Buffyreboot
Was trying to find a broadcastable PantyChrist song but failed! However, Slant 6’s What Kind Of Monster Are You? would kind of work.
It may irk us Old viewers, but I think they have to avoid sticking too slavishly to the repercussions of the last season, otherwise it’ll be far too alienating for kids jumping in. One slayer is plenty to be getting on with.
Delve into the bigger stuff later on, but keep at least the first season unencumbered by LOOOOOOOORE. Basically go full eccleston-piper and then take it from there.
Jinx I was just posting the same! You don't have to answer all the lore questions in s1. You just have to have them worked out. And I want six seasons and a movie baby.
Ha! Great minds.
I do think Nu Who is a good template in terms of levels of backstory. But since SMG is gonna be in it they do need that backstory carefully thought through so they can dripfeed it alongside whatever new slayer story they have.
I reckon she’ll either have some kind of amnesia, a hand away to drip-feed the history back into the show, or she’s gone full get-off-my-lawn Skywalker and simply doesn’t want to talk.
I think she'll be in a LOT of therapy whatever she's doing.
jinx re Nu Who I mean
People watched the 2005 Doctor Who show just fine without watching everything from 1963, it's the same as that - it doesn't have to be ABOUT continuity. But the continuity in the background adds richness. I think part of what's great about the potential (sorry) of this show is the heritage...
...not "this girl is special and the first girl to be special" but this girl comes from a long line of women, a community of women even, embedded in what's gone before, she IS like other girls.
I've deliberately avoided reading about the #buffyreboot, but I'm very wary-excited about it FOR THIS VERY REASON. I wish we could have new 'buffys' just like we have new Doctors Who. Different names, different cities, different personalities, different issues, but with some slayer continuity.
I love speculating so much, it's part of the pleasure for me - ditto with Doctor Who. And yes. Newness, like Whoness can be.
Whereas I think it'd be interesting to have the group dynamics of a group of "chosen ones." I am SO TIRED of the single person whose job is save the world let's get a community instead
Yes: "A slayer with family and friends sure as hell wasn't in the brochure" or whatever the exact phrase was. Go beyond the scoobies to the wider community!
And groups of slayers. I'd be very interested to see different versions--willing, unwilling, nerdy, sassy, with differently shaped families, from different cultures and heritages and how they jell/clash
I'm less keen on lots of teenage slayers cos that would mean we're in a world where every slayer is a new line, and when each former potential dies, we get a new teenage slayer, which could get...out of hand quickly! But I'd love the potentials at being in the show at some point.
...but isn't that the result of the spell anyway? Or is it more like random mutations now rather than lines?
Also unclear how many potentials were awakened - how many there are in the world at any given time.
If they don’t all grab onto each other and combine into a MegaSlayer I’m going to be very disappointed
Children of the 80s UNITE
Just realised there’s a LOT to explore in the whole “the slayer is always a young woman” thing.
Unclear! They never said. I assumed at the time it meant that each slayer was a new line, but I think in terms of writing a tv show it would be just too many slayers (unless having lots more slayers meant a much higher survival rate ergo fewer activations). That'd work actually.
Another option: every girl who has the potential to be a slayer awakes when the time comes without anyone dying. So it's like the slayer spell is always happening, and when you hit the right age, you awake.
Or the right set of circumstances--i like this. Where a slayer is needed, one will rise
cue 9 million slayers appearing in westminster to tackle the vampires there...
And also, you don't have to follow all of them everywhere at once!
No true, as long as you can gesture to the various places in the world where slayers are operating. And explain how they do and don't work together. Still as a writer the idea of juggling it all makes me feel very tired lol
That's why this is so fun 😂 for once in our lives we can just throw stuff in the air without any weight or consequence
I thought it'd become randomised! 😂
Also they need to deal w trans slayers as per HMRC
YEPPPPPPPP
Adolescence exists in such a different context now, and the new generation of teenagers has a much more urgently looming climate apocalypse to go alongside the vampiric and demonic ones. So there's so much richness there, so much opportunity to explore high school life thru vampires #Buffyreboot
That said I ALSO want a spinoff that's middle aged buffy and co living their lives and what it means to be someone who saved the world back then. #Buffyreboot
I started writing this (but set in Yorkshire). Stalled because all the publishing people I pitched it to went 'I LOVE it, but I won't be able to sell it. Pass'. Julie Kenner had the Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series that was basically middle-aged Buffy.
PUblishing can be so foolish.
Well, if they change their mind, I've got 20k of bits of it sitting on my computer. There's a thriving Amazon category called 'Paranormal Women's Fiction' which is all midlife women with super powers. But it's all indie books. Trad publishing seems to have never heard of it.
Thank you. Had never heard of this but looking for it RIGHT NOW.
Have fun! (And if you want ANGRY middleaged women with powers, try The Change by Kristen Miller
Oh I read that last year. It’s been passed around my menopausal gothy friends with great enthusiasm:-). (But yes, that is EXACTLY the vibe I was hoping for.)
I've not read! I did really enjoy HMRC which was a similar vibe to what I was looking for, tho I want even more rage ;)
The Change is fantastic. I think you’ll love it, in that case. HMRC sounds like a good tip too though.
I shall go and look up HMRC right now!
Kelley Armstrong does this, with werewolves and suchlike. More thirty-something than midlife (depending on what you mean by midlife but as I’m now 55 I tend to think it is in the 40-50 year range, ie maybe juggling family life rather than relationship angst).
My one hope is that Andrew has died offscreen and is never mentioned again. Everything else is golden
NO! My fave!
I must live my truth! I hated him soooo much.
Storyteller is basically the inside of my head
Then I take it you hate me for he is me. 😆
Haha, Louie, if it's what it takes to bring back Anya... I have bad news
Anya is also precious so this is hard. The only good american right winger.
*sniff* she loved capitalism 😢
RIP Anya, you would've loved AI
Came here to ask this.
Hoping NO. Make it be no, universe.
