Going from "You need to believe these things, or at least appear to believe them" to "Questioning everything is not only tolerated but encouraged" has been a big adjustment, and I still have moments of "No, but is this really okay?"

I got kicked out of CCD for questioning everything. They really do not like that.
Wait - that’s a thing? Really? (Realizing my Catholic school education *may* have omitted some things.)
Yeah! In practice it varies a bit depending on the denomination, but my (officially Reform, in practice pretty conservative) Rabbi has said that you can take any position you like as long as you can back it up with Jewish philosophy
An acquaintance who became a rabbi just this year would delight in taking the most out-there theological positions possible just for the fun of figuring out how to debate them. He'd often be hosting Mormon students from BYU and they found all of this to be very alarming
Truly - this is really cool. I wish we were in normal times when I could just enjoy learning new things and hearing new perspectives without being distracted by the dread of the world. Here’s to better days and open minds! Thanks for sharing!

CAN CONFIRM (See, eg, the classic "Are Porgs Kosher" conversation that emerged thanks to @sirosenbaum.bsky.social )
This is a big thing for me even though I came from anglicanism aka the most milquetoast version of christianity available. Although in retrospect I think they probably wanted little-kid-me to stop asking so many questions because it was annoying rather than anything else.
Yeah, my ELCA-Lutheran upbringing was pretty good at "we're PROTESTants, we're SUPPOSED to question authority!" (Unlike mom's LCMS church...) but I still got asked to stop playing "stump the pastor" for the same reason I was asked to stop answering all the teachers' questions in school...🫤
It is!
