Our politicians and media have dug out from under their rocks some of the nastiest people in the UK

I despair - there’s no sensible debate (or media commentary) about so many issues. I had really hoped for better - thus far I have been bitterly disappointed. I can’t make up my mind about what’s more broken politics or the the media: what it lacks is a compelling story of contribution & humanity.

On the plus side both Rowan Williams and Stephen Cottrell have made helpful and reasoned contributions.

But not the PM and then we have people like Charlie Falconer weighing in. I assume he's going to propose detention camps next since Labour MPs don't much like the use of HMOS www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

I was trying to find some glimmer of a positive. I am sorely disappointed with the performance of the Labour leadership on so many fronts now. Having boxed themselves in there seems to be no initiative to escape, a triangulation that leads further away from a solution.

It's just awful. FB is an absolute sewer of hate and prejudice.

Never joined, don’t wish to. However sadly it’s now what a lot of people use as news. Crowd ‘wisdom’ is not, especially due to the algorithms, a reliable source.

I use it because my cycling club uses it. I think it's unwise for politicians to ignore what's being posted there.

Indeed it seems effective for local groups, from what I hear. I would agree, and would endorse a social media strategy.. but it’s neither journalism nor open debate but more of an echo chamber of whispers.

Belle de jour @bowman120.bsky.social

We have been a deeply divided nation ever since Brexit - which was a combo of the impact of the 2008 financial crash (barely talked about now but largely responsible for events in US, EU and UK since) and hostility to migrants - which was the major talking point in run up to Referendum.

Dark money dehumanising people (both subject and object) and stimulating the meanest instincts. When done repeatedly it sticks I think.

I think we are being flooded with foreign money from people with a racist agenda, I don't think it reflects the vast majority of public opinion.

I'm sure that it doesn't but repeat something often enough and people tend to believe it. And it really doesn't help when the PM makes speeches about experiments in open borders and islands of strangers, as well as filling the No10 X account with posts about illegal migration.

That's horrific. Our surgeries and A and Es are full of unhealthy British pensioners.
