I really like this video. Old-timers will nod and say hey - it's not rocket science. And he agrees! But if you've never wrangled assembly for real, or you understand the theory but have never seen the practice, it's a really nice set of worked examples. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmHp...

I loved the video, especially as someone who sticks to high level and doesn't get down n dirty with the assembly level very often. They made it easy to understand. As a very minor criticism I'd prefer if they dropped the music. I think their presentation is very clear and doesn't need jazzing up.

I really meant no music at all, but as you say it's a stylistic choice and didn't affect my enjoyment of the video.

Normally I would agree with you. If I want music, I can supply my own - I have an entire internet in my pocket. But in this case the music is by this absolute star - so I'll allow it. www.youtube.com/@AndersEnger...

They're simple enough - copying and filling memory - that you can follow along, especially if you hit pause and sit down and figure it out - it only takes a minute or so. But the changes are SIGNIFICANT. These are HUGE wins, just from understanding what the code is ACTUALLY doing.

Just as a quick defense of the original coders - they could totally have done this. They were smart folks. But (a) they didn't have the profiling tools we have today. So figuring out what was ACTUALLY taking the time was tough. And (b) development times were ASTONISHINGLY short back them.

They hit the good enough target. Too much investment doesn't pay off!

Saved to watch later! Do you recommend the rest of the series?

Yes, they're all good. This one was just a perfect vertical slice all the way from problem to solution, without needing that much background.
