Same issue in Texas. Since the Great Freeze in 2021, electric rates have spiraled upwards to double what they were a few years ago. I'm using less electricity and paying more for it than I ever have.

You figure a whole house A/C costs about $8,000, and a similar amount will buy you 19kW worth of solar panels. As a bonus, you could use them to keep the sun off the roof.

I wonder what the AC unit draws - maybe twice what my fridge & freezer draw when the compressor's running, so say 100w. I was idly speculating on a dedicated panel atop the Aircon unit itself to run the motor. No switching or controls - the sunnier (so hotter) it is, the faster the pump goes.

In Arizona I didn't have good enough credit to get an electric account. They gave me a box that I hooked up to a plug in the apt. I go to one of the local grocery stores and put money onto a card that I would then put into the machine in the apt. And we had electricity until the money ran out.

I agree that we have the power to boycott and it'll be easier to do so when prices surge and more cannot afford increased prices. However, I also see corp greed in places where we cannot boycott (utility cos., e.g. ... also rents where I live). Corp greed is present in our politics.

There are so many things to hate about privatized utilities that I dont even know where to start. I dont know about AZ, but I know in CA they have successfully argued that they need to increase rates to offset losses from court settlements. Public utilities should never be for profit.
