He didn't really?
Ugh. I mean, I believed you. But sometimes it's hard to believe such freaks actually say these things out loud and people are like "Yeah, that sounds like a solution!".
I mean, with all the AI and propaganda, etc. you kind of can’t believe anything anymore… I didn’t believe it until I found the video.
As a transplant anesthesiologist and bioethicist, I have concerns about this flippant ideal from O’Neill - a right-wing libertarian extremist who spent his career running investment funds with and for billionaire Thiel. O’Neill has no medical, scientific, or public health training.
His plan? Encourage people sell their organs. He says this with the confidence of a capital “L” Libertarian, as though it’s the most obvious solution to the organ transplant waiting list.
At the time this statement was recorded, lots of right wing libertarian think tanks, like the Cato Institute, were pushing this “solution” to the transplant waiting list. They love the “free market” that enriches the rich at the expense of the poor.
This video has resurfaced amid a national discussion about the dangers of organ donation in a financial system that already encourages Organ Procurement Organizations to push organ availability. Iran is the only country that allows such buying and selling of human kidneys.
Iran is the only country that allows such buying and selling of human kidneys. The practice there has been legal since 1993, with a fixed rate fee to sell organs. Who chooses to sell a kidney in Iran? People at the lowest financial rung of the country.
Wealthy Iranians (highly unlikely to be donors) can bypass the year long waiting list by paying donors thousands more privately. Saudi’s have forged Iranian documents so they too can access Iran’s kidney system. America will be no different.
Just look to Steve Jobs, who in 2009, received a liver transplant in Tennessee, despite living down the street from Stanford Hospital in California.
When you have a private jet and unlimited cash, you can afford to improve your chances of a transplant by being listed at multiple centers.
Legalizing organ sales will benefit far more wealthy people than people who must labor to maintain their meager hold on privatized health insurance. Meanwhile, on Independence Day 2025, Trump cut $1 trillion from Medicaid over the next 10 years.
Iran, to its credit, at least has a public healthcare system. To consider organ sales in a country that has just drastically cut healthcare access to poor Americans, is cruel and exploitative.
Ya, he has two....we should use them first.
😬
For the love of all that is holy, let us all survive this administration's blatant attempts to kill us, one way or another. 🙏🏽
F’ing ghoul
I use forced kidney donation for men as an analogy to explain why forced pregnancies should not be allowed. I use it b/c it's so extreme. I really am in the dark re: the depravity of the ppl in charge.
All of this, coming from a Theil event, is not shocking. Ultimately that's what will (most likely) kill me. The cancer gets bored and goes kidney eating. Will I get - no. Im on budget chemo, when that's a thing.
