No Jon is right. The last true Major League baseball was blasted over the RF porch of Tiger Stadium by Ken Griffey Jr in the 5th inning of their 8-6 victory on April 17th, 1997, and never recovered. Since then they've been using a likeness that just happened to be in Jose Bautista's pocket that day.

The “dead ball era” ended when Carl Mays hit Ray Chapman in the head during a game at dusk in 1920. Chapman didn’t make it

I believe it dates back to 1993. When the Blue Jays won the series. It may have been formalized in 97, but I think the first time was 93. Nobody wanted to use the same ball after that.

Boy, that's where you're wrong. The "balls" are never in play at the exact same time in those two games. They pass the ball back and forth in-between each play. You don't notice it because the broadcast has a 24-hour delay to give time for the homing pigeons to bring the tapes to Cooperstown
