coldplay deserves the same national image rehabilitation project we undertook for linkin park and nickelback. everything they put out past their first three albums or so wasn't really my bag but they're a good band

Fine but Three Doors Down is beyond redemption
guessing you won’t still call him Superman then
This post feels like it belongs on tumblr
Feel the same about Snow Patrol.
I’ve also heard they’re a great live show
lol at a bunch of people in the replies tripping over themselves to double-down on their biases towards accessible music genres. there are types who think every pop band they don't like are a fucking corporate psyop or something. get over yourself. hear Jerusalem bells-a-ringin.
I like to think Chris Martin wakes up crying every morning as he remembers he's not Thom Yorke 🤘😎 (I know, I'm a bad person🙄)
Nah. Mind you, part of this is that I had to hear Viva La Viva on the store radio every damn day for eight years. But also, I'm just a colossal music snob. I never liked Coldplay. Or Linkin Park or Nickelback either, just found all of them agonizingly bland.
Their music is less bland than people think, it’s just constantly played at low volumes in grocery stores. ime no music sounds interesting at low volumes.
Coldplay is fine, Linkin Park was fine. Nickelback made dreck and remains as such and I won't countenance dissent on that
You fools! You’re getting Bois’d!
The funky jazz jam song 'Arabesque' (with Fela Kuti!) on the album 'Everyday Life' is a great track. They still surprise.
l think Coldplay is good, but they need to answer for their crimes on inviting James Corden to sing a Prince tribute youtu.be/mak_Cu9Wl6w?...
I think a lot of Linkin Park's rehabilitation came from it being proven that Chester Bennington actually meant wat he was fucking singing.
Which goes to say how much all this talk is trash, as if somehow fans owned the musicians.
This is true and you’re right to say it
yes. we all love nickelback. so why all the hate for their equals, coldplay
coldplay is british nickelback
exactly
Feel like the hate might not have metastasized if it wasn’t for the Judd apatow movie that says “you know how I know you’re gay….?”
To me, the hate is preposterous. Shiver, Don't Panic, things of that nature.
Spies, as well
And it was all Yellow
bsky.app/profile/robm...
Thank you Ben, was getting very lonely over here lol
Parachutes is a legitimately great album that had the misfortune to drop at a time where the discourse around “overly-commercial” music was rampant
Everything’s not lost. The entire second album is fucking amazing.
Their first three albums were brilliant. I still love them.
I mean Parachutes,A Rush of Blood to the Head and X&Y have pretty good songs. Afterwards...eh
I think not only should Coldplay be universally reviled (for being so egregiously soulless and paint by numbers among myriad other sins), but that their fans should also be openly ridiculed for defending them.
You are an awful person.
No, I just think Coldplay is shit. I promise it's not that big of a deal.
I saw Coldplay in Louisville after that third album came out. Good show.
Interesting that you left the comments open for this skeet but not the one about microwaving hotdogs.... Is it "hotdogs" or "hot dogs"?
Nickleback, Creed, and Limp Bizkit being even slightly accepted is proof we're heading towards collapse
Viva la Vida had some good songs, but the title song was always very obnoxious to me.
In fact, Violet Hill is a GREAT song.
Not into Coldplay but they deserve it way more than Nickelback and at least a little more than Linkin Park. They wrote Clocks!
your best bit yet!
Linkin Park needed rehabilitated?
“band”
Lo más loco de todo es que estás escuchando a Taylor Swift en una playlist de Spotify y te salta Yellow de la nada.
i think if you put out more than one album, technically the band is good, right?
mylo xyloto deserves the world
Amen
Linkin Park's first two albums were always good. I'm unsure what you're huffin w/r/t about Nickelback but Coldplay is the good stuff until suddenly they weren't any more.
what is their best song? I'm not familiar with their ouevre.
The 40 year old virgin said they were gay 20 years ago and there's too many morons that haven't changed in 20 years and still think liking stuff makes you gay
Theres also 20 years worth of new morons to say its good though
whatnow?
Don't think what I said was very complicated?
I don’t care for their newer music, but they are a super fun live show. Lots of energy, etc etc. Don’t @ me.
The fourth album is actually the best! Brian Eno produced it, that alone would be enough to make it the best.
I liked and still like Linkin Park’s first two albums. Coldplay is fine. I still listen to early limp bizkit at the gym
There are a lot of people making excellent music and songs that I hate
I really liked the way their lead singer was a good bowler and terrible batter for New Zealand in the 2000s and early 2010s.

theyre one of my fav bands theyre goated and awesome
They’re both more successful and more hated than they “deserve” to be. Rush of blood to the head is a great album. Absolutely no clue what they’ve done since Viva La Vida though. Apparently a bunch of stuff!
the hatred some people have for Coldplay is bizarre, they seem like one of the most inoffensive bands ever. even if you don't like them, they're just kind of...there? not anywhere close to the aggressively annoying or bad stuff that has hit the airwaves over the years
I was talking with someone who was genuinely shocked that Coldplay’s chart performance mirrors U2.
So hard to fathom the surprise there, they’ve always felt connected.
I just can't imagine hearing a track off Parachutes—admittedly the only album of theirs I own and I've heard recent stuff only just in passing—like Yellow or High Speed and just seething in rage, like, "YO, these guys??? FUCK these guys!!!!" lol
Their sound is like a dental drill in my skull and they play it at the grocery store. This is why I have such strong dislike for them.
if your idea of a dental drill is slow and somewhat boring pop rock with kinda dreamy sounding vocals, you should probably broaden what you've heard dude, lol
Or you know, maybe we just all have different taste?
When I have I said people couldn't had different taste lol I'm saying there's a world of a difference between "this band sucks" and legions of people who apparently believe that hearing Coldplay is akin to torture and getting a drill in the head, it's a bizarre reaction to their kind of music dude
I mean to me it should be the music to torture me with and just because you disagree doesn't make it bizarre just means we don't like or dislike the same things. I'm sure plenty of things on my Playlist would set your teeth on edge, that's not bizzare that's just life.
the inoffensiveness is the problem. what do they stand for? at least offensively mainstream music stands for naked capitalist supremacy
assuming this isn't some dumb/unfunny bit, ill support them if they stand for making people like you angry about stupid shit
I’m sorry you need to feel offended all the time.
Sure, I’ll put in on my to do list. It’s item number 130429 ranked in order or priority.
jon i have been on this train for years. justice for coldplay!!!! their melodies and hooks are genuinely some of the most compelling in modern pop rock. my fav deep cut is strawberry swing
They have some great singles from those records, that piano riff in Clocks is fucking cool
There was a game called Dropmix where you put cards on a board that was synced with an iPad and it would play an instrument from a song - you could make all these remixes by putting cards down with drums from one song and guitar from another, ect Long story short I used Clocks piano in everything.
The team that made Dropmix did a PC/Console version called Fuser. It was absolutely brilliant.
Fuser is so good! (And ALSO has Clocks, haha)
There was that Jon Pareles review.
The first three Nickelback albums were your bag?
Im a fan of Linkin Park and for me I was always fine with the exchange. The people need something to dunk on and they get to be wealthy for the rest of their lives. My offer: if everyone agrees to give me millions, they can dunk on me forever. Ill act like it bothers me to. Ill keep it kayfabe.
That first three album run was generational talent
I hate being that guy but... 4 albums. Please don't ignore that Viva La Vida life. 👀
It's got a special place in my heart. I actually sorta just tuned them out after that album, but I have Parachutes, ARoBttH, and Viva (and the Live 2003) and that's all ill ever need.
some of us have been here the whole time.
Viva La Vida is their best album
No
I didn't agree to rehabilitating Linkin Park nor Nickelback, and I'm not letting Coldplay slide either
Mylo Xyloto was one of my favorites when I was younger. Still holds up, even if it following Viva la Vida caused it to feel 'lesser' by comparison
"every teardrop is a waterfall" should have been the hit that "paradise" was and then some. great guitar part too, i play it sometimes and people are like wow that sounds so cool what is it? then i get to disappoint them
I had no idea Coldplay wasn’t universally acclaimed. They’ve always been great
Whoa buddy, Billy Joel is first in line
Wait do people not like billy Joel...?
please send him and all his recordings on a rocket into the sun
wait why lmaoooo. i genuinely had no idea people hated billy joel this much this is funny to me.
We didn't start the fire is a baby boomer naming every fucked up thing over the last however many years but guess what? It wasn't their fault so they're not going to do anything to fix it. That's what turned him from annoying AF piano man to deserving the rocket.
“Ya got any wuddah?”
thank you everyone. your responses have been recorded in the survey. my friend is now asking about Bon Iver too for some reason so answers appreciated bsky.app/profile/shag...
bon iver was always good but i like the more recent stuff the most tbh
(I enjoy Billy Joel but it’s a funny bit)
I would say he has some very good songs and some...uh...well let's just say some not-so-good songs. Middle of the Night and For the Longest Time are jams but if Uptown Girl or We Didn't Start the Fire come on I just pray I have a barf bag handy
I know that you're from Louisville and that Kentucky isn't in the Midwest but the second sentence here has extreme Midwest Nice energy
And those first three albums were really good!
Linkin Park was never rehabilitated they were always fucking awesome, we just started letting ourselves enjoy things again. Same thing for Coldplay.
Linkin Park fell off the map after their first 2 albums but people never stopped liking those albums
what are you talking about? the only albums that didnt hit #1 were hunting party and from zero. every album before one more light went platinum
Yeah I’m not just standing by for living things and thousand suns disrespect I love that duo
minutes to midnight! it's aged like wine, too 😍😍
I didn’t even consider standing up for that one like that’s an obvious great one to me
yeessss
Always that one person that defends minutes to midnight 🤷♂️
some of us remember how much shit they got for it when it came out
If they had to be rehabilitated, as Jon is implying, its because of that album
they didn't need to be rehabilitated, as stephen said
Something about seeing your name in a tweet is very jarring lmfao (Or whatever we call them here)
Its still shit
it's arguably their best album
Lol this has the same vibes as the people defending Nickelback. If you enjoy it, good for you I guess
Linkin Park were always dope as fuck. Nickelback … I think I’ve just moved on from even talking to nickelback fans and just accepted there’s enough people who like mid music to make them rich (see swifties)
I’d throw in viva la vida for that sort of hidden shoegaze song alone
I was at a midnight swim here in Toronto because it's been hot as balls and "Viva la Vida" came on over the radio. I was floating there like "You know what, this is a fucking jam."
i heard/saw (can't remember) someone once describe coldplay as "worship music for atheists" once and honestly? yeah
they're filling a niche that people clearly need. i'd much rather have them than the alternative (alex warren/david kushner/etc.)
Gonna hop off this train at the next stop
I’m saying, they don’t deserve this hate they’re a fun band and seem like generally nice people, plus a rush of blood to the head is awesome
I wasn't aware the groupthink was positive to Nickelback now. I loved early LP; I don't mind their later electronic stuff. What's everyone's problem with Coldplay? Maybe I don't know their very most recent stuff but I've never not enjoyed what I've heard.
This is your funniest post
when did we rehab nickelback
how you remind me is a classic in my eyes.
here's a fun example www.youtube.com/shorts/5hZrb...
Came here to ask the same thing
are you thinking of creed
wait it can't be creed
i don’t know if i can live in a world where people are gaslighting themselves into “good, actually” about both nickelback AND attack of the clones
i didn't even know people were rehabbing attack of the clones. i rewatched part of it recently and i have no idea how that's possible
As someone who is sick of the “my generation drinks from a water hose” nonsense - This is the Zoomers fault
My 7yo nephew likes it bc he’s obsessed with all things Star Wars but he’s you know. 7
you forgot sebulba o'clock by qui gon guitar and the rockin' jizz band
Because Rise of Skywalker exists and it’s fundamentally a way worse film than AOTC
Attack of the clones is the worst prequel by far but not the worst Star Wars film Plus it has Dexter Jettster
polygon did like an entire week on its reappraisal (RIP)
okay so I do just want to stipulate here that while we published an "Attack of the Clones absolutely rules" piece for its 20th anniversary in 2022 (www.polygon.com/22875571/att...), we put in the lowest tier of our rankings of every movie and TV show in the franchise (most recently updated in 2024):
Aw come on, AOTC is NOT worse than Rise of Skywalker.
AOTC is approaching decent if you skip all the Anakin & Padme chapters. What’s left is a detective movie starring Obi Wan. Now TPM is beyond redemption. And ROTS… also oof.
lol fair enough
A generation saw the prequels as kids, with no capability for critical thought, and those kids are now adults who grew up in today's America, meaning they've never developed any
The obi wan half is a fun pulpy detective romp at the very least, aided by the fact George didn't have to write any emotional dialogue for it
There was a documentary about Nickelback a few years ago that was alright, so that started the ball rolling a bit.
one of these things is not like the others. nickelback isn’t bad, they’re just very average rock. attack of the clones is actively awful
I'm all for letting people enjoy things, but hearing absolutely every piece of media I experienced in middle school now being called "good, actually" is exhausting.
It's an overcorrection by people who decided cringe was dead and the "let people enjoy things" comic (disavowed by its artist btw) was the new god.
I still say that was a positive message. But "let people dislike things" (or "hate things" if you must; I try to reserve that word for more serious things) is just as valid. And if the topic is serious technical review and evaluation, like few on the interent actually do, then it's all good.
I never stopped liking Coldplay. I didn't know they needed rehabilitation
Part of why we can rehab these bands is nobody listens to the radio anymore. Their biggest sin was nonstop radio play. I can enjoy ironically (but actually earnestly) listening to Nickelback a few times a year. But it was hell hearing "Photograph" play ten times an hour back in 2006.
I would be OK with going back to hating Nickleback after they did that tour with Kid Rock
Stop
What if Coldplay was never actually good? 🤔
no those bands suck not particularly hard👿
That damn "Fix You" song being all over the King Kong (Peter Jackson movie) marketing hurt them badly.
We did nickleback?
Every generation needs its own Steve Miller Band
The Yugioh 5Ds school of being contemporarily cringe and then overcoming it
The music isn't the issue. I've never heard anyone say it's bad. It's the plagiarism. No rehabilitating that.
Life in technicolor 2 is a really good song and only liars disagree.
They're like radiohead if they were a sappy nice guy at the party with a guitar instead of the pretentious genius with a guitar. Either way, who made this guacamole? it's fantastic
Please sweet Jesus no it's bad enough out here, I so do not need to hear Coldplay in places that should know better
Fourth album was pretty good™️ too
Nickelback????
Nickelback cannot be rehabilitated. This is the line we just draw. The detente must not become a capitulation! They must remain excised from the great dictionary of music maintained by the Pitchforkburo.
They went from being a Radiohead tribute band (goodish) to being a U2 tribute band (very bad).
The indecipherable hum when soft satire and brazen sincerity finally overlap
I call this the "irony poison pill"
How the hell did we wind up like this? In the end it doesn't even matter. Look at the stars, look how they shine for you!
you deserve thousands of likes for these two absolute bangers
This was my opus, Jimbo. I'm guessin' that's all that I've got
Prelude to a clip
whoa hold up when was nickelback rehabilitated?
I feel the same way. Not my cup of tea, but glad they exist. Lots of folks do enjoy both bands music and I’m happy they bring positive energy and enjoyment to them.
My god you people are PAINFULLY boring. Do you know how many great bands there are and you're rehabilitating a multimillionaire pop band?
I totally agree! Vanilla ice cream is way too spicy!
Another great joke from Jon. How does he do it?
I think you should leave now.
I’m not sure why you just slandered Linkin Park by grouping them with Nickelback but you should take it back.
Came here to say this.
